Computer just rebooted out of nowhere to some green ok's

For no known reason at all. What could possibly do this? Debian sometime does these auto reboots? So I was using Debian normal. checking some stuff out. I leave the PC for a second and out of nowhere it starts restarting. What could possibly trigger this? I did not have anything to do with it or had...

Re: Why is Chrome not asking for keyring again, security iss

Chrome is asking for gnome key ring and you say its not a great idea all together, yet chrome best handles multimedia so I'm forced to use it when other browsers are failing to open flash. I also use Firefox and Chromium on the side. Sometimes flash wont work on different browsers. You know if askin...

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

If regular byte checking after a ctrl c and ctrl v copy paste is enough, then why does rsync even use md5?

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

As in, have you ever copied something only to realize the MD5/Sha1 or whatever is off right after a successful copy paste operation is over? No, I haven't had such an issue. How'd you copy the files? With thunar. I segregate data. It doesn't all get the same treatment. How do you address possible f...

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

I do put large check files in the mix if concerned with the particular media. I use video files with the sha1 sum as the file name, and a thunar custom action gives a zenity dialog for a quick compare, ie filename=sha1. I keep 1G,4G,10G and 64G files handy. Other than that, yes, cycle often. How'd ...

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

Maybe read this: https://www.securedatarecovery.com/services/hard-drive-recovery/what-causes-hard-drive-data-corruption Serious data corruption is more likely with larger files than with smaller files, since larger files take up more physical space on a hard drive's platters. If a hard drive has tr...

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

So, you are saying at first, when you first transfer them to the drive, they do open ok and are good ? But after a long period of time they become corrupted. Exactly. The only thing I can think of would be where they are stored, for example if they were close to electric motors, generators, any mag...

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

Looks like ill stick to happy medium rsync (still dont know if its exactly necessary though) and it was just an issue about better cold storage all along. So 100 dollar basic consumer cold storage isn't doing it. Paying more for better External Hard Drives seems to be the real way out of this data c...

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

So its therefore an issue of preventing backup data corruption then. Files open normally at first and then after some time of having been stored on every external hard drive I've owned, they just stop opening due to data corruption warnings So I figure this will have to do with the corruption at the...

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

Is there a reason why some DE and its GUI file manager doesn't work right? Well to be more specific the exact issue is that I store my data on Seagate External Hard Drives and even though the byte count was right, after some time the files won't open due to data corruption errors. This is not somet...

Re: File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need

How do you copy ? Its full folder copies (and individual files as well) and figured that the three best options at the moment for simple folder (and individual file) lossless copying are: a) md5deep hashing Seems overkill. b) rsync -r rsync -r /home/USER/compare1/ /home/USER/Pictures/compare1copy/ ...

File Size comparing enough to ensure copy ok or we need MD5?

I'm copying large amounts of data from cel phone into my PC and have experienced data corruption before. I'd like to make sure that the copied files will open correctly in the future/experience 0 corruption. Is it necessary to generate and check md5 checksums for every file or does just checking the...

1. Need the working step by step on how to non root startx from recovery on up to date latest debian buster stable. Works as root but I heard its not advisable to startx as root. 2. Re: How do I xrandr -x in Recovery mode?

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-legacy And select 'anybody' for 'allowed users'. After my previous last post, I decided to go ahead and venture into it on my own figuring I could then reconfigure it if any issues. Seems that the dpkg reconfiguration can be started from normal log in or from recover...

Re: How do I xrandr -x in Recovery mode?

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-legacy And select 'anybody' for 'allowed users'. From recovery or from normal log in? Any? This safer than just using a straight superuser startx from recovery? Why shouldn't I just startx from default superuser recovery/ why you say startx should be run as normal us...

Re: How do I xrandr -x in Recovery mode?

X should not be started as root. The picture you provided shows a permission error and it seems you tried to start startx as a normal user but in the/root directory, where that normal user has no rights at all. Change the directory to your home directory. A simple # su user $ cd ~ $ startx will pre...

Re: How do I xrandr -x in Recovery mode?

You don't need recovery to edit the grub file. If you do that wirh recovery, changes to grub only last for that one boot. To make changes permanent, you need to edit /etc/default/grub with root rights and afterwards perform sudo update-grub The contents of your Xorg.0.log do not show any errors. Wh...

Does not sound like a virus. What makes you think that? Where did you get the installation media from? Did you check the checksum? You were accurate; it was no virus at all.
