Re: Debian for server?
Some points I noted with Debain. 1. If something does not work with Debian stable, it means only one thing - you misconfigured it. 2. The dependency tree is very short with Debian. An install with well chosen apps is likely to stay within 1 GB. 3. A wide array of security tools. 4. Wide array of app...

Re: cron sending emails with plain text password
I have very basic mysql application, and there is no such cronjob. I looked at man page for mysqlcheck, and it does not mention any cron job. So, I suspect you did somethign / installed some other application, which added this application. A good way to avoid using mysql passwords and usernames is t...

Re: CPUFreqScaling applet missing
Is frequency scaling working?? Look at contents of /proc/cpuinfo (`cat /proc/cpuinfo`) - the line with "cpu Mhz" will tell you what speed he processor is running. If it is not working, try looking at the modules loaded. Also, ensure that cpu freqeuncy scaling is enabled in the bios - "...

Re: How to fix LSB headers for a package?
IIRC, to make the messages go away, you need to add dependency info too. Here is an example for fetchmail. You can experiment by copy pasting this into your script, (with necessary modifications) and check your results. THis is not going to fry your system - if it does, just restore the backup you m...

Re: How to create SubDomains using terminal
That is basically apache configuration. You need to edit create a file, like, say sub.domain.conf and put it in /etc/apache2/sites-available/ and symlink it to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ Contents of sub.domain.conf should adhere to basic httpd.conf paramaters. Next is getting the DNS pointed to the...

And I suggest that you select "expert" mode while booting from the CD. That way, you get still more control over what is happening. <joke> What is tasksel?? </joke> I refuse when some app wants to install a meta-package (which depend on tonnes of MB of bandwidth). Instead, I select precise...

Re: check disk
If you shut down both Debian and puppy linux (whatever that is), there is no reason why Debain should check your disk at each reboot. Looks like you simply pulled the power plug without choosing to shut down. Even with Live distros, (the ones which run off a CD / USB), you need to clean shut down to...

Re: I have no idea how to do Debian
Please post output of the following two commands:-
1. lspci
2. lsmod
First command tells us which graphics card you have, second tells us which kernel drivers are loaded.
Does a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file exist? (this file is not required; but some graphics drivers may require that file).

Re: USB Magnetic Stripe Reader treated as a second keyboard
Stumbled upon this just as I was looking at some info for barcode readers. Not sure if this thing is a barcode reader - it probably is not. But barcode readers too read the data, behave like a keyboard and dump the info on to whatever application is running in the foreground and end the data stream ...

Re: How to get back Debian Boot Screen Image ? Help Needed
Ntty and Maverick are, AFAIK, Ubuntu releases. Nice if they bundle Debian specific graphics / images / packages, but unfortunately, they may also decide to remove these. Too bad that Ubuntu is not Debian, nothing much can be done about it. Anyway, look for /usr/share/images/desktop-base/*grub.png im...

Re: How to install P4-clockmod and other cpufreq modules ???
Software based frequency scaling has to be enabled in the BIOS. Most MoBos disable that by default - at least, two of mine did. However, I cannot tell you what exactly to look for in the BIOS menu. I do not remember right now. It is something like "cool and quiet" on AMD processors. WIll b...
