Re: Hibernation wake up speed
The your method comment was to simplify comparison, not to offend in any way. I understand the compression thing but what I found interesting was that seems as if writing is faster than reading. hdparm gives same read speed.

Re: Is there an automatic .config generator for kernel 2.6.3
It's wise to compile some parts however as modules, the info blurps even suggest that so they can be unloaded, e.g. at hibernate.
I guess the rule of thumb is to compile in stuff you gonna use all the time (i.e. your root filesystem) and leave as modules something only used seldomly (say usb stuff).

Re: Hibernation wake up speed
I get Write 38 MB/s, Read 49 MB/s with http://tuxonice.net/ on 2.6.35 and EXT4 using LZO compression FWIW.
Edit: Your method of testing disk speeds gives me the interesting result of write 27,5 MB/s and read 27 MB/s.

Re: Dependency questions
1. That gnome-desktop-environment is a metapackage, which contains no code but depends on many other actual packages that do. If you remove one (or more) of those packages, also the metapackage will go.
2. That's right.

Got the link somewhere? And if it's a 400 page document, a page number would also help.Miguel Perez wrote:Temperature may be a factor in making the drive fail earlier. As Google found out in a statistical study[citation required], hard disks actually run better when hot (think 40º) than cold.

Re: Laptop volume buttons and GNOME Volume are not synchroni
If you could disable the hardware functionality you could then manually bind the keys in GNOME keyboard shortcuts (or if that doesn't work as sometimes happens, in gconf-editor /apps/metacity/ using xev to find out keycodes). Perhaps such a switch could be in the BIOS or perhaps you need some wonder...

See http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration
Unless you have a really bad connection I would suggest using the netinstall next time. That way you get what you want and nothing else.

Re: Kernel compile and install on Debian 5.0 for newbies
I was actually thinking about that too, but most of the replies and discussion here are about Debian 5.0. You could just call it "Kernel compile and install on Debian Stable for newbies" And put in an comment in the tutorial about the first 5 pages of discussion being about Lenny. The dee...

Re: Kernel compile and install on Debian 5.0 for newbies
@Rolling Stone Will there be a "Kernel compile and install on Debian 6.0 for newbies"? I've used this tutorial/howto on Lenny and always liked it. And yes, the difference for compiling on 6.0 is obviously minimal, but it could be good to start on fresh, perhaps, and perfect what is writte...

Push the FreedomBox Foundation from 0 to 60 in 30
The FreedomBox Foundation is seeking pledges. I found the linked Eben Moglen's speeches interesting.

Do you see the grub menu at boot?
2.6.32......
2.6.32...... (recovery)
If you do, click e to edit and remove the quiet parameter to get more info. If not, what exactly do you see?

suspend & hibernate problem solved
Neither suspend nor hibernate worked. Then I added the nomodeset kernel parameter, now both work.
I've had this experience on both nvidia and ati cards.
