Re: Debian SID questions and answers
Well, in the end it turns out that SID is still a usable system. That may depend on what parts of it you wish to use. Some parts may not be usable at all for some time. It isn't a stable system; that's why it's called "unstable." It's meant to be a quarry for "testing"where pack...

Re: Debian SID questions and answers
Some people have suggested using this command for Sid: apt-get update && apt-get install $(debsecan --suite sid --format packages --only-fixed) However, I suspect that this version would probably work better (most of the time): aptitude update && aptitude install $(debsecan --suite ...

Re: Debian SID questions and answers
More specifically, I installed the system from testing iso. Then in source.list I replaced Bullseye with unstable. What are the risks of going back to the testing branch? Testing is generally regarded to be less reliable than Sid. It can take many days for upstream bug fixes and security updates to...

Re: Debian SID questions and answers
I've been using Debian for a long, long time. I respect your opinion, but the fresh, crunchy packages of popular applications cannot be found in the official repositories of the Debian stable release, just a simple Firefox browser, for example. That is why I think it makes sense to use at least test...

Re: Debian SID questions and answers
No point auto-checking - there will always be updates, and you will need to evaluate them manually anyway if you don't want it to blow up. aptitude is what i would recommend for sid. More specifically, I installed the system from testing iso. Then in source.list I replaced Bullseye with unstable. W...

Debian SID questions and answers
I didn't find such a topic, it might be useful. I would start with it. Yesterday I installed it using a netinstall iso in a production environment. I managed to configure all the things I needed except one. Is there a graphical interface to automatically check for updates after logging in, such as P...

Re: Why do you use debian?
My argument. It used to be difficult to configure Debian in the past, and it is easy these days.

Re: Sudo or not sudo?
Are you trying to start a flame war? This board used to have heated discussions on this topic. Using sudo to run a command as root is equivalent to logging into the root account and running that same command. Therefore, using sudo is certainly not safer than logging into the root account. In fact, ...

Re: Sudo or not sudo?
Been biting my digi-tongue for this persons posts. :P Gotta say, do your own homework and research dude !!! it's actually somewhat involved and I don't feel like typing a bk out so you don't have to find/read the already massive amounts of info on the topic yourself. After the kdesu thread, which a...

Re: Sudo or not sudo?
Why is it not preferable to use sudo by default in Debian? Because some users, like me , do not want to use "sudo" , those that do want to use it can install it and set it up if they so desire. I can't directly answer your question but I just wanted to point out that sudo is the default i...

Re: Sudo or not sudo?
I think you have to enter the root password during the installation, because it can't continue.Dai_trying wrote:I can't directly answer your question but I just wanted to point out that sudo is the default if you do not enter a root password when installing.

Re: Kdesu is missing in SID?
Thank you for your valuable answers. I know these workarounds. Using pkexec is a bit more uncomfortable than kdesu, because it requires preconfiguration. Regardless, I don't think pkexec can completely replace kdesu, but I don't want to start a war of opinion.

Kdesu is missing in SID?
I noticed that the kdesu package was missing from the unstable branch. I searched in the Synaptic package installer but couldn't find it. Am I correct?
