Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

Thanks for testing and my condolences — choosing between OSX & Ubuntu is like choosing between syphilis & gonorrhea... I got a kick out of that, but I disagree. Either one is light years ahead of Windows, esp. for someone like me who ENJOYS to spend most of his day at a CLI haha. (OTOH, I'm...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

That error is completely unrelated to your key presses. To confirm this boot the image and wait a bit, the message will appear even without any user input. Confirmed. What I need to know is if your key presses are accepted — do you see any letters appear on the screen at all? Can you switch to anot...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

(Ugh. Sorry about inconsistent shell prompts. I edited out the time, $PWD, and bash-history-number of two out of 4 of the shell commands. No good reason. Better I don't edit at all of course!)

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

OK I tired your 10.3.2. Got a grub screen, hit Enter. Booted to a shell prompt. Same problem as 10.3.1 ... type any key, get Bluetooth error. Though this time there was a delay of a few seconds between keystroke and error message. I write down on paper the first of several errors for you ... [ 15.72...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

Must be a l10n issue, my images are using the 5.4 kernel. I'm baking a version with an option in the GRUB menu to select different locales, give me a bit... Head_on_a_stick - If you do "bake" a new version, I will give it a try. I did want a Debian install, and I am still willing to put m...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

Thanks! But no joy. I'm going to try Ubunutu Live next. I have reason to think it might work. I also welcome your further suggestions on the Debian front. That's the short version. Here's the long version: I downloaded /Users/kdeen/Downloads/buster-backports-10.3.1-amd64.hybrid.iso (your update). I ...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

Perhaps also try the iommu=soft kernel parameter. I tried appending "iommu=soft noapic nolapic" to linux command line. Result: I get a "BusyBox" shell prompt. But unusable because kb is dead. I withdraw question about "noapic" vs "noacpi" after finding list o...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

I think I can build you an image with the kernel from the buster-backports repositories if you give me a bit. Wow that is most kind of you! "giving you a bit" is no problem since I'm going to sleep in a few minutes. It's late here. Or use an Arch Linux ISO image and this method to install...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

This resource(*) says keyboard and trackpad "works out of the box with Linux 5.3 and above" on MacbookPro 14,1 (which is what I have). My .iso is debian-live-10.3.0-amd64-xfce+nonfree.iso. Does this mean I am using Linux 10.3.0? (*) https://github.com/Dunedan/mbp-2016-linux#keyboard--touch...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

Can you switch to a console screen with <ctrl>+<alt>+F3? Short answer no ... but there is more to say ... I am using the mac boot manager (old down the <option> key during power up, and I get a choice - boot from Macintosh HD or "EFI Boot". I choose EFI Boot. Then I get a GNU GRUB screen ...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

What problems are you having with the keyboard, exactly? The keyboard, best I can tell, is completely dead - except for the power off key. That brought up a dialog box, with options like "Log Off", "Shut Down", and some others. However, I was not able to change the selection nor...

Re: Advice please re MBP dual boot install

Mar 27 3:23pm Sweden time update: I copied (dd) this(*) to my USB stick, and now I can boot to Debian live with xfce. But my MBP trackpad does not work and I think ditto the keyboard ("I think" because I am not sure what kb functionality to expect at the xfce desktop). I am researching/con...

[Solved] Advice please re MBP dual boot install

Hi All, I have not used Linux in many years. I want to come back. :) I would like to convert my macbook pro (2017, 13-inch, 14,1, APFS) to dual boot Debian/macOS. I have done nothing yet. At this stage I am only reading and trying to understand how to do it. I have four questions. I am currently &qu...
