Re: Use HTTPS
Yes, I can imagine there's been a few posts about this. I just replied to this one, since it was fairly rescent. No, there's no reason to repeat, but since you took the time to write a good reply, I'll response to some of it. I will say this much, I agree, there is no real reason to use it on this f...

Re: Use HTTPS
Considering that this forum is .net ,(debian.forums.net), and debian.org is a entirely different website, nothing odd about it. It does strike me as odd that some one would still want to beat this dead horse, after all that has been said in various older topics. Missed that part. Still, it's not a ...

Re: Use HTTPS
debian.org is using an LE cert. Since LE can do wildcards, it's a bit odd why this forum haven't got it yet.

Re: 500 Internal Server Error trying to attach pictures to p
I've used https://postimages.org a few times. Seems better than imgur (imo). On the picture page, you get a few pre formatted link alternatives to use… like “Thumbnail for forums” (BBCode).
Would be great if the Upload attachment tab could be removed, since it doesn't work anyway.

Re: Any way to control an undetected fan?
Here's a pic if that helps: https://i.postimg.cc/KkBy6309/Adda-ab5505hb-hbb.jpg Made a better picture now, to show all the areas inside, and that i/o chip. https://i.postimg.cc/Cnnbq7RL/amilo-si1520.jpg Left the lid on the side so you can see the intakes, and loosened the Wi-Fi card to expose the i...

Re: Any way to control an undetected fan?
First You have to make sure how the fan is controlled, by measuring voltages on the connector: 1. When the fan is stopped, the voltages on particular pins should be: GND=0V, VCC=5V, PWM=0V. (GND can be on +5V level -> not a PWM) 2. When the fan is rotating, the voltage on PWM pin should be close to...

Re: Help with sources.list
The problem with the build-depends of the xfdesktop4 package simply means that the newer build-depends must be built and installed first before you tackle the xfdesktop4 package. Basically, like "the house that Jack built". This is quite a pain in the rear if you tackle manually building ...

Re: Help with sources.list
The instructions for adding stevepusser's repository are here . Note that it says, "Buster users need to replace "_9.0" with "_10"." But, that's not the repo, or did I miss something? Xfce isn't here: download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/ stevepassert /Debian_10/ …...

Re: Any way to control an undetected fan?
A relatively simple solution would be to inject PWM signal from a separate generator (f.e. build on NE555 chip), but in the first post You've said that HW modding is not an option - so there's only one option left: You have to get used to it ;) No, I didn't say it wasn't an option. I asked if it wa...

Re: Any way to control an undetected fan?
I didn't re-watch the whole video but I recall it was spinning permanently at a constant speed set by the amount of voltage drop from the diodes, but that could have been another video I've watch quite a few of his, but still wouldn't give you speed control. Yes, his problem was a fan spinning cons...

Re: Any way to control an undetected fan?
Has it ever been disassembled and all the accumulated dust and drek cleaned out? If the CPU isn't too hot, it probably doesn't need repasting. And some laptops just run hot, no matter what. Some Apple products were infamous for that--form over function. Everything is cleaned out, and new paste on t...

Re: Any way to control an undetected fan?
Yes, maybe something like that, but in reverse. I need to make it spin, when it's not - instead of slowing it down.Dai_trying wrote:This might work for you if you are adventurous.

Re: Any way to control an undetected fan?
Nope, it's not too warm - the CPU is not a human - it can easily withstand temperatures over 36.6 deg.C :) This is a common misunderstanding, that the lower the CPU temps are somehow "better" - while in fact, the only task for cooling systems is to keep the CPU temperature below some crit...

Re: Any way to control an undetected fan?
No, most laptop fans cannot be detected and controlled by Linux. You may be able to modify the BIOS to change the temperatures at which it engages and stops, or even the kernel driver which controls it, but that is more complicated. Yes, it is. I'll see if I can come up with som hardware modding in...

XFCE 4.14 backported to Buster, and even Stretch: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:stevenpusser:xfce-4.14 Aah… That is fantastic news. Thank you! So, do you have any documentation for that… What do I need for source? and do I need to setup a prio? # /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xfce_stevepus...

Re: Help with sources.list
Testing can be fairly reliably useful, most of the time, although things tend to get interesting around the freeze and post-release, and of course, package transitions can happen at any time. Yes, that of course. But, if I go on and upgrade to testing now, using “bullseye” (as wording) instead of “...

Re: Help with sources.list
Your welcome Thanks! for the reading. You might be ok with Debian testing, I can say I have been running it for over a year now, but it is on a VM , in any event I have not had any problems what so ever, and every time I run updates, / upgrades , they go smoothly. If you find what you need in the D...

Re: Help with sources.list
efdevse, I suggest you read Don't Break Debian Then the Debian sources.list wiki. Then, read about Debian backports. Don't skim, read the whole thing, especially about sources.list. Thanks! for the reading. The 2 first, I've read few times, no skimming. The last one… I haven't seen that one, but I ...

Re: Help with sources.list
Use backports to get packages from bullseye. Yes, that's what I'm doing now, but Xfce isn't in backports »»» . Well, again to quote the Manual: The use of testing or unstable is a lot of fun but comes with some risks. Read on at life_with_eternal_upgrades . Bear in mind that: Understand that the jo...
