SOLVED - Unmount persistence image from Buster live USB

Hi I am using a persistence image file to store and save system settings such as WIFI for my Debian Buster Live image run from a USB stick. As I want to run the live image in RAM so I could remove the USB once the system boots up, I wanted to write a script to allow the persistence image to be unmou...

Re: SOLVED - Running other distro ISO's Debian Buster Live U

This was the write up I did about the steps I used to create the Live USB. Hope it of use to someone. Lets start by installing the needed packages sudo apt install gdisk grub-efi grub-efi-amd64-bin grub-pc-bin -y Before we continue, we need a way to find the USB mounting point. The best way I have f...

Re: SOLVED - Running other distro ISO's Debian Buster Live U

The link was the steps I used. If you think its spam I am happy to delete it. Just let me know. I can just copy the text. Your assumtion is incorrect. The only reason I repeated my requet was because I thought it was usful. PS. I have received no direct help from anyone on this forum for me to use o...

Re: Running other distro ISO's from Debian Buster Live USB (

OK... Although I still think it is not off topic, thank you for your reply. The area where it is relavent to Debian is the grub bootloader and how it could change the boot order of the EFI's installed on the USB to reload another distros grub. I have been trying this, and so far I have been able to ...

Re: Running other distro ISO's from Debian Buster Live USB (

I dont understand, how this thread was push to OffTopic section without any option for me to reply. This was about Debian and NOT Ubuntu.
Is there any procedure or can anyone push a topic here.
To me this is very hard handed... A shame as I was starting to like the forum.

Re: Running other distro ISO's from Debian Buster Live USB (

Thank you Head_on_a_Stick for telling me where to go. I wanted to ask Debian experts about how to setup Debian to handle multiboot from a USB. I used Ubuntu as an example. I will take your advice and ask for help from Ubuntu forum, BUT the question I asked is relavent to Debian. At least in my humbl...

Re: Running other distro ISO's from Debian Buster Live USB (

Thanks for the suggestion, but I wanted to learn how/if I can have multiple BOOTX64.EFI files on the same USB device, the same way HDD EFI do, so I can boot other distros. As I said above, I already have worked out how to build a custom Live USB of Buster 10.5 which can boot using Secure Boot. The p...

Re: Running other distro ISO's from Debian Buster Live USB (

Yes I do. Have you looked at their size? My build using debootstrap and chroot ( with a google chrome browser ) is around 200MB, including free and non free firmware. Also can you update them on the live medium? Thats the point. My build is designed to run in memory and allow the end user of the liv...

SOLVED - Running other distro ISO's Debian Buster Live USB

Can I ask as this question has a solution which is for Debian Buster that this thread is removed from the Off Topic section I have managed to create a live USB of Debian Buster 10.5 which works with Legacy Boot as well as UEFI Secure Boot. What I am trying to do/learn is if it is possible to run oth...

Re: SOLVED - Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

I bow my head in shame. Thankyou for repeating you comment, it did not get through to me the first time. My build is not a live-build so I was trying to do the same using basic debootstrap and chroot. I have been focusing on build a minimal build, currently under 400MB with LXDE and a chromium brows...

Re: Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

Thanks for letting me know how to close this thread. If I was doing somthing for my own machine, you would be correct. However, I am trying to build a product for use by end users with little to no IT skills so I have to provide a path for machines which do have UEFI secure boot. As I mentioned abov...

Re: Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

As a final update before I close this thread. Microsoft is getting their pound of flesh. From what I have learned... if you want to create your own live cd/usb with full secure boot support YOU MUST have signed keys which can ONLY be done my Microsoft. I have just started the process and it looks pa...

Re: Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

Thanks for the link... I will let out some steam there. I am thinking of closing this thread, but will keep it open for a while longer in the hope of figuring out how to boot my build when secure boot is disabled as currently with 10.5 I can only boot my USB in legacy mode. Which may be the solution...

Re: Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

"FWIW most UEFI firmware implementations will actually allow live USB sticks that do not support Secure Boot to start even if Secure Boot is enabled." Do you know how to do this or where I can start looking. If I can create a USB which can boot to grub in lagacy mode and UEFI ( with the ne...

Re: Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

Can I rant a little... This is crazy. If the idea is to prevent unautherized software from running on a secure boot machine. All I would need to do is use the live iso to boot the device and then stick my USB into the PC and load what ever software I wanted ( if I am the bad guy ). This seems to mak...

Re: Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

Secure Boot OOTB Damb... I thought as long as you dont change the packages which are from debian any build based on the will work the same way. But I guess you are correct, as no one changes the live iso's created by them. So that can boot up fine with secure mode. The installed version will then be...

Re: Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

That was a quick reply. Thanks. I used MSB because GPT seems to need another boot loader ( syslinux or is it isolinux ) . Also I am trying to get a USB setup which does not require me adding any keys. So I could walk up to someones PC and just bootup from the USB. Will I be able to do this without s...

SOLVED - Debian Buster custom UEFI Live USB

Hi Until the latest release of Debian Buster 10.5 ( I know this is due to vulnerability fixes made to efi grub ) I was able to build a USB stick with legacy and UEFI boot ( with secure boot disabled ) which held just my initrd, vmlinuz and filesystem.squashfs and used grub to load it toram. Now when...
