Re: Steam wants to create new user namespaces
Today Steam worked again, so I guess the issue solved itself. Maybe some app temporarily used too many namespaces?

Turning off the light in the fingerprint reader (using fprintd)
I have a fingerprint reader built into my Microsoft keyboard, and followed the instructions here to set it up. I'm impressed by how trouble-free it was, especially considering the keyboard is 15 - 20 years old. It even works for sudo! But now I wonder if there's a way to turn off the red light under...

Re: [Solved] App indicators gone in Gnome?
Nevermind, the extra applets are included by default in Debian 12. When you add panel applets, it's under org.gnome-panel.status-notifier So to get a full notification area you need: org.gnome.gnome-flashback.system-indicators (sound/microphone) org.gnome.gnome-panel.notification-area (network) org....

Re: App indicators gone in Gnome?
Thanks, livix07. It does sound like it's not included. They even recommend a third-party plugin.livix07 wrote: ↑2023-08-19 15:10 This is the official website for Gnome Flashback:

Re: App indicators gone in Gnome?
Have you installed all the packages (dependencies) related to Gnome Flashback? Did you install task-gnome-flashback-desktop ? Yes. task-gnome-flashback-desktop is already the newest version (3.73). This article, for example, claims the functionality is gone from Gnome, and that you need to install ...

[Solved] App indicators gone in Gnome?
I'm using Debian 12 with Gnome Flashback. There's no tray with app indicators in the panel, that display icons for programs like Steam, at least not by default. I can't find any in the Debian 12 packages, either. Reading around on the web, it sounds like they've removed it from Gnome, and you need t...

Re: [SOLVED]Windows (meta) key not working
Do you have a gaming keyboard where you can turn off the Windows key?
I just made that mistake. Didn't realise until I read this thread, and starting thinking about hardware errors.
(I know this thread is seven years old, but it was the first result on my websearch, so it may help someone else.)

[Solved] DXVK/VK3D update breaks games using Wine
There's a recent update to DXVK and VK3D which breaks a lot of games running under Wine. The error messages are not very informative (if you get one at all). To solve this issue, simply revert to the previous versions of DXVK and VK3D, respectively. For example, under Lutris, right-click a game and ...

I also tried to create a new user profile and log in using it. Xfce4 loads normally on the new profile.

Re: xfwm4 not starting automatically at login
I also tried to logout of the graphical desktop, logging into the tty, and deleting ~/.config/xfce4 and ~/.config/xfce4-session. The results were the same.

[Solved] xfwm4 not starting automatically at login
I'm using Debian 11 (bullseye) with Xfce. At one point, the window manager stopped working. All windows were placed in the upper left of my desktop, and it was not possible to focus on them by clicking with the mouse and input keypresses, my autostart programs didn't start, etc. I solved this by swi...

Re: Runescape not working on Buster
When you run Runescape in a terminal, do you get any error messages? No, nothing. ~$ runescape-launcher ~$ I also tried installing Oracle Java 17 and setting it as the default JRE, but it makes no difference. $ java --version java 17.0.1 2021-10-19 LTS Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 17.0.1+...

[solved] Runescape not working on Buster
I've installed the default version of Runescape (0.5.1 from non-free). When I try to run it, the splash screen appears for a few seconds, then exits silently. There are no error messages on the command line. Runescape depends on default-jre, which I have installed: default-jre is already the newest ...

This solution is very simple and uses stable software from the standard repo: Format your internal drive with full disk encryption (LUKS) Format your SSD with LUKS Copy your files to your SSD using rsync E.g, this command copies your Documents folder to a disk named ExternalSSD. rsync -av --delete /...

Re: Using 4 TB disk with old motherboard.
there is no reason that a chipset has a size limit of 2 TB (1.8 TiB). Such components use binary arithmetics, not decimal. Indeed... Unless it implements some kind of RAID, and the limit is in it's firmware. As a matter of fact, this motherboard does have RAID built-in. I put in a second drive to i...
