Re: help all my txt files have turned executable.

I did the command as given above, but seems to have no effect. its curious, when I untick the executable tickbox, it immediately gets ticked back again. when I do chmod ugo-x ./file then do ls -l, then its all rwxrwxrwx for the files. However some files in computer harddrive which where previously l...

Re: help all my txt files have turned executable.

I did mess around with chmod command without knowing it's controls very well. I've looked further, not all parts of my filesystem are like this. Some directories txt files open as normal. however at least my work directory and external harddrive seem to have this issue. It's strange because I...

Re: help all my txt files have turned executable.

it is not just one directory, it seems to be all filesystems. Even txt files in my external harddrive are being prompted as executable. (scratch that : a txt file in a connected USB is opening as normal. hmm) this is the user history : https://pastebin.com/H9wDV15z this is my admin history : https:/...

help all my txt files have turned executable.

For some reason I turned on my computer today, and then now I notice that all my .txt files are executable! I cannot uncheck the executable checkbox for all files on system. not ideal. What can I do? I don't know what went wrong. however I did experiment with some terminal commands yesterday.

Re: ' disk error ' after installing update

(right now) computer boots, the manufacturer logo comes up, the black-screen error comes up, I press enter, the grub menu is triggered, there is now a list of selecting debian / fedora dual systems. I don't quite remember how I accessed the grub menu at the start ( did it come before the error?) act...

Re: ' disk error ' after installing update

No the error comes first. The machine boots, the hardware company's logo comes up, then it goes straight to the black error screen with the text. But from there I was able to press 'any' key (e.g. space) and then the grub menu is shown. I think I could do this after I did the timeshift restore. sudo...

Re: ' disk error ' after installing update

This looks like a BIOS message, or a boot sector message. Does the machine use UEFI or BIOS/legacy boot ? BIOS How many drives are connected to this machine, including USB/removable ones ? uh, actually... If there are several ones, how is the boot disk selected ? I think I set the boot order to be U...

' disk error ' after installing update

Hi, I updated my Debian system today using the routine software update notification. There was a system update part and also some other packages, including thunderbird. The first time I triggered the update, it wanted a restart. When I came back to the machine, all there was on the black screen was ...

Re: How to adjust screen contrast and gamma, persistent settings?

well...it didn't persist over the shut down. but I've made two bash files for day and night settings, and the brightness amount file is copied ( cp command ) from my user directory to the backlight directory. It doesn't take that long to set the screen (have to give sudo privilege and run the bash f...

Re: How to adjust screen contrast and gamma, persistent settings?

The change of setting didn't persist over shut-down though. I changed /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness to be less than 1608, now after restart its back to that amount. there are also folders called : acpi_video1 and acpi_video0 in the /backlight folder. well I guess I can put all of o...

How to adjust screen contrast and gamma, persistent settings?

Hey, I'm currently using xgamma : xgamma -gamma 0.8 xgamma -quiet -rgamma 0.50 -ggamma 0.50 -bgamma 0.50 - to change the gamma of my screen. But these settings are not persistent over shut-downs. how to have the settings stored in a file and applied at startup? And I want to change the screen contra...

Re: debian installer does not detect already installed Fedora system

I see. makes sense. I'll simplify the system partitions to a few, but will keep a separate data / home partition.

I hope the Fedora issue is, like one person above said, because I separated /usr from /root. hopefully having just root partition might
fix it.

Thanks.

Re: Trying to get Java Debugging working with Vim. Any help.

I've now tried to install 'YouCompleteMe' but it was not successful.
I've now tried to install coc-java and coc-java-vimspector, and that seems successful but but that also gave an error when trying to run debugger.

I think I'm going to stop here.
