Re: Leaving systemd...

@steve I appreciate you trying to help me and the alternatives & information you provide, I will utilize that info, but please don't speak to people like that. He has a point, because as far as I recall back when systemd was still a new thing I tried to escape by switching to distros that promis...

Leaving systemd...

I'm considering switching distros from Debian to another distro that doesn't run on systemd, maybe I will choose a distro with runit, still not sure. Can anyone tell me what are the major most expected problems that I'm gonna face as a desktop user (not operating a server) after this transition? Res...

Re: Delaying a startup app

I have seen videos where Debian has a store, but it was on Gnome, is that strictly for Gnome? I have yet to see a store for MATE :? I normally install the Debian installer where it offers all the DE's. These app stores are known to be buggy I really don't recommend 'em. Anyway here are your options...

Re: Removing Firefox-ESR

You can't completely remove Firefox, it's like a system package, the same goes for LibreOffice, you will most likely end up with a semi-broken system due to losing many essential dependencies, or you will face issues the next time you try to install anything new. Gnu/Linux uses a dependency ecosyste...

Re: Delaying a startup app

Why put a command like that if it's going to wipe a person's system? To show the difference between storing a file and executing a command? There should have been a disclaimer right along side of it in red/bold because some people may have not noticed the bottom or just read part of the reply. extr...

If it has to be, just make it show

Code: Select all

Instead of

Code: Select all

Edited YY/MM/DD, total number of edits X
That way you can have your edit notification while I keep my privacy, best of both worlds, that's how Telegram does it.

I was responding to many people at the same time, it had to be clear which is for which. For god's sake you can't even make a consensus on what triggers the edit banner.

To LE_746F6D617A7A69: I think you were wronged here. Also I would like to tell you that the paper you share in your signature titled "Why I hate Microsoft" by F.W. van wensveen has been very informative for me, it's exactly what I was looking for, a lengthy in-depth record for the forgotte...

Re: New Update Is Counter-Productive

We can highlight that this is not a new feature Yes it is, I was browsing the forum a couple of days ago and it wasn't there. John then decides to troll and edits the original post That's why I said if someone is abusing edits to manipulate others then moderators should take action. So between the ...

Re: Delaying a startup app

Create a new text file and type () then leave it somewhere, done? Now open a terminal and execute (), is it the same? Leaving files resting on your hard drive is not like executing 'em, and music is not like non-free drivers! Stability is not measured by inches, stability is a broad term, and in thi...

Re: Delaying a startup app

Considering the non-free installer only contains extra firmware which will just do nothing except use disk space if not used, I question whether it could actually make the system less stable. Debian live = Bundled annoying software and much less stable Debian non-free = Only less stable (as far as ...

If you keep that attitude next time you won't find anyone willing to help you. You'll be stuck with archived threads and old abandoned posts which might or might not work for you.

Graphical apps starting with superuser in window title, some apps failing to start, Pluma unable to read inside hidden folders, apps starting with new configuration files that override mine.

Re: superuser

Absolutely not! If one doesn't create a root password during installation the user is automatically added to sudoers and sudo must be used for elevated privileges. I suppose you're right, although there are other one-user distros like lightweight Puppy Linux that starts in root by default, will ful...

Re: New Update Is Counter-Productive

I disagree and I think it should not be shown. either users have the ability to edit posts or they don't, which I prefer they don't, but granting them this ability then showing information about edits is wrong.

Edit: it's really weird how you're all thanking each other.

Re: superuser

You're right, I tested Firejail right now and it's causing me all sorts of trouble when launching various applications. You can still enjoy Firejail, just don't set it to auto-start and don't type sudo firejail only use "firejail appname" when you wanna launch a specific app with Firejail....

Re: superuser

I've been watching lots of debian 10 installs on youtube and none of them create a root password, because it's risky as they say and using sudo is a better option That's it right there. Read this found in Debian's wiki: At installation time, you are asked whether you want to use the root account or...

you have to view anything that you commit to the Internet as an active archive, meaning your original comments will be viewed/archived/read/preserved. No not necessarily, not everything I do will be logged, and even if so, not every log will be kept. I think most forums show when an edit has taken ...

As you know there are many options to download Debian, right now Calamares is only available in Debian live (titled try Debian live before installing) Here is the link for the fully-free .iso files https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/bt-hybrid/ And here is the link for the non-fr...
