Re: Debian 10 Painfully Slow . . .

USB installation seized again. No changing it. It can only be the demands of a running OS and the relative tardiness and fragility of a USB drive. May try Deb 11 on a small SSD or hard drive in a week's time. Threw out quite a few games from the displayed apps. Surprised how Debian organization rega...

Re: Debian 10 Painfully Slow . . .

Maybe; no disrespect but I think it's more likely there's a small error in your install process. There's an awful lot of bad advice on the internet and when folks ask me I always tell them to follow their distro's documentation when installing. Debian's install process is extensively documented, it...

Re: Debian 10 Painfully Slow . . .

@stevepusser : I did mention the USB in my first post though not in the heading. Going well now after a fresh install to the 15 GB USB drive. Conclude that the 30 GB USB previously used may be damaged or have a lot of bad bits. Installation (relatively) fast and running fast. BTW - the documentation...

Re: Debian 10 Painfully Slow . . .

The only successful install was on the 15 GB USB. 13 Gb for Debian and 1 GB swap. After the config mess-up I changed to a 30 GB USB, using 20 GB for Debian and ~ 10 swap. Seizure. Then I reinstalled with 13 GB (fearing too much swap was bad and having a 16 GB RAM PC) for Debian and 1 GB swap. Snail ...

Re: Debian 10 Painfully Slow . . .

I''ve had enough of this stupid Debian 10 stuff. If you fellas ever get your Debian installer act together then I guess we'll all hear about it on Debian 11. For me, it's just common sense that a Linux distro called Debian should be straightforward for people used to Ubuntu, Manjaro, etc to install....

Debian 10 Painfully Slow . . .

After my first successful Debian 10 install, I started a list of configs described here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7pETJpOQhg #2 (Changing to a faster mirror site) was done and the Software & Updates window was reloaded before exit. A completion line for this task started but never quite r...

Re: Debian 10 + Gnome Full Install On USB Impeded

Well, I tried installing: * Pop!OS - Apparently some problem with this "commercial" distro that showed up during installation when some package wouldn't open . . . * Deepin - I was unable to install it into any USB since it needed a 60 GB minimum space . . . A pity as it's looked beautiful...

Re: Debian 10 + Gnome Full Install On USB Impeded

I tried to manually partition the USB and I applied the same type of partition for the bootable zone as I had on my SSD drive for Ubuntu. All seemed installing well till late into the Install The System process I get the message below. IMG_20210804_185218.jpg I think I have done enough for the Debia...

Re: Debian 10 + Gnome Full Install On USB Impeded

The Calamares installer (as I understand it) is only used when you boot into the live Debian option and then click on the Install Debian button. I had no success seeing USB drives with that before or after burning my installation USB with Etcher. So I followed the standard installation advice and ch...

Re: Debian 10 + Gnome Full Install On USB Impeded

I have isolated the issue to the fact that my Dell laptop boots via UEFI and UEFI requires that all bootable partitions have a boot flag indicator so the Grub loader know where to go for that system. No bootable flag was on my USB installation. Also other issues regarding visibility of partitions, c...

Re: Debian 10 + Gnome Full Install On USB Impeded

I have never had any problems installing Debian. I have never used Ubuntu. Maybe there's a connection between existing Ubuntu systems and the fact that the new addition to the grub loader is for Debian. My trouble is that after every longwinded installation to a new USB, the Debian 10 system won't ...

Re: Can't burn DVD-2.iso or DVD-3.iso using Rufus or Universal USB Installer

Zoltan: 1. it might be better to use Etcher https://www.balena.io/etcher/ rather than Rufus to burn the Debian ISO (including non-free software) onto your USB. 2. Insert the installation USB in your PC. On restarting hit F12 till a one-off boot menu shows and then select to boot from the USB where t...

Re: Debian 10 + Gnome Full Install On USB Impeded

SOLUTION The problem with the Live Debian Installer not seeing my USB drives was solved by burning the Debian ISO image to a USB with Etcher https://www.balena.io/etcher , not Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator. (Apparently most ISO burner programs only work on a given distro.) After I booted into the n...

Debian 10 + Gnome Full Install On USB Impeded

I'm an Ubuntu user who is exploring Debian and want to install Debian 10 onto a USB drive. I downloaded an ISO that has Debian 10, Gnome and non-free software for drivers, etc from here https://cdimage.debian.org/images/unofficial/non-free/images-including-firmware/10.10.0-live+nonfree/amd64/iso-hyb...
