Re: 90-second delay restarting and shutting down Cinnamon 5

Update: After switching to sddm on 2 PCs and one of the laptops, the problem is gone on all of them. Notes: The delay will occur one more time after installing sddm, but after restarting using sddm, it should no longer occur. Special Note: If you autologin to Cinnamon, you'll need to correct that ma...

Re: 90-second delay restarting and shutting down Cinnamon 5

A bit surprised nothing has been said in reply to this post. Anyway, the problem has not been corrected yet, as of updates on 10-17. Still does it on any hardware. On my main PC, I installed Debian 11.1 from the unofficial firmware iso, then temporarily added sid to get all the program versions I us...

90-second delay restarting and shutting down Cinnamon 5

Turning the way-back machine back about 2 weeks, there was an issue for a few days where updates broke Cinnamon 5 on Debian Sid/Experimental. Cinnamon 5 failed to load the taskbar and was in fall-back mode. I had gotten around this by removing Cinnamon 5 and reinstalling 4.8 from Sid. Then Cinnamon ...

Re: Debian 13 Trixie Security and Updates

I know you only have to have the bookworm line for testing, but the security and updates repos were active for Bullseye for a long time before it became stable. My point here was that the app has a problem that needs to be corrected. I started using Bullseye Debian 11 more than a year ago, and the S...

Re: Nomacs... Why is it only in the Sid repo?

Thanks for the info. The program works just fine on any distro I've used it on. There are plenty of packages included in Buster, Bullseye, and Bookworm that really don't work very good. Audacity is one of them. Doesn't display toolbars correctly, and it's cumbersome to set it up to record anything. ...

Nomacs... Why is it only in the Sid repo?

Suggestion: Please put Nomacs in the Bookworm repo. I really don't get why it hasn't been in the Bullseye repo all along. Nomacs is an excellent program for use as your default image viewer, and it's been my choice on any Linux distro for a long time. In Debian, I can only get it from the Sid repo. ...

Debian 13 Trixie Security and Updates

Thought that title might get your attention. I am posting this to point out an issue that has existed since the first time I rolled into Debian Testing Bookworm back in August. It still exists. In the Software and Updates app, once Bookworm has been established as your base repo for the Debian Softw...

Debian (12) Testing ISOs are now here

In discussion on other posts, I had brought forth the controversial idea that Debian 12 Testing is already here for all practical purposes. Bookworm is the codename for Debian 12, and the Bookworm repo has been active since August. I had said that I expected ISOs by December, but they are here now, ...

Re: [Solved] Updates today (9-25-21) broke Debian Cinnamon

Interesting stuff. Although I mentioned that the wonderful Debian team solved this particular issue, they seem to have created another one. On all of these machines, Cinnamon 5 will now work on Bookworm/Sid, but it doesn't want to stop. It logs out to LightDM fine, but on reboot or shutdown, Plymout...

Re: Updates today (9-25-21) broke Debian Cinnamon

I stay with Sid and roll with the breakage. LOL. Final update: Sid actually fixed this problem today, so I will consider it solved. Today when checking for updates, Cinnamon 5 was available from Sid, so you no longer have to force the update from Experimental. I considered whether or not to Lock ver...

Re: You don't need latest and greatest computer to run Debian

I'm not running Debian on anything quite that legacy, but the 3 PCs and 2 laptops I have running it are 5-10 years old. Runs great on all of them. All of them will run windows 10, but only 2 of them run it well. I don't really use windows anymore. Debian is so much better.

Re: Cannot boot after install

No matter how often I added my user to the sudo group as root, the user just could not sudo. This is one of those issues that Cinnamon allows you to easily correct in the GUI. In the Users and Groups settings applet, you just change your user type to Administrator instead of Standard User, then log...

Re: Updates today (9-25-21) broke Debian Cinnamon

If you're suggesting that this Siduction post is my problem, thanks for the link, but I already have version 1.70.0-2 of libgirepository. BTW, Siduction is cool. I use it as well. Update for 9-27 is that this issue still hasn't been fixed on Debian's servers. I had one more PC running the same setup...

Re: Updates today (9-25-21) broke Debian Cinnamon

Another update: Performing the same procedures on the laptop to be able to install Cinnamon 4.8.6 instead of 5.05 worked as expected, so it is working again. I'm not going to do the same with the secondary PC yet, because I'd like to see if updates eventually fix the issue. That PC has Mint 20.2 Cin...

Re: Updates today (9-25-21) broke Debian Cinnamon

More info: The laptop got 30 updates today around noon Eastern Time, but did not change anything. I'm in the process of removing Cinnamon 5.05 from it as well, so I can install 4.8.6. Booting to Kernel 5.10 on it made no difference, either.

Re: Cannot boot after install

You may want to try one of the unofficial Debian isos with non-free firmware, if you didn't already. They are available with the slow Debian installer, or the Calamares installer which runs from a live iso. The Calamares installer is easier and faster, but leaves a lot of language and locale package...

Re: Updates today (9-25-21) broke Debian Cinnamon

Always known that breakage is expected in Debian Testing/Unstable/Experimental, but have never really had it happen over the year or so I've been using it. Had a few issues for a week or so with VirtualBox during the Python3 transition, but future updates from Sid corrected those issues. I know righ...

Re: Updates today (9-25-21) broke Debian Cinnamon

No, I didn't break one box and do it 2 more times. I was updating all 3 at the same time. Simple to reinstall, but I'd rather it be fixed without having to do that. By the way, nvidia had nothing to do with this. None of them are running nvidia graphics. 2 are legacy ATI/AMD and the laptop is Intel,...

[Solved] Updates today (9-25-21) broke Debian Cinnamon

Forgive me for accessing this board using windows 10 (eww), but updates today broke Debian Cinnamon on 2 of my PCs and a laptop. Exact same problem on all 3, and all 3 have completely different hardware. All 3 are running the new Kernel 5.14 release from the Sid repo, and Cinnamon 5.05 from the Expe...
