Irresponsible advice

In the thread about Firefox, two moderators recommended binaries by an anon that goes by the handle "nanotube". https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=150576 While I'm grateful for their trying to help, these binary blobs may or may not contain hidden malware. Some packages in the pip r...

Slackware is genius!

But it is not real. Those who have "tried it", like this guy: https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=137939 and this guy: https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=136920 and countless others fell for the joke. To quote the https://i.imgur.com/RHgyp9Z.jpg "I figured...

Re: Criticizing Debian against the rules?

While we are discussing this thread, please explain why it was moved from "Questions", where it was originally posted. This was literally a question. I had been under the impression that Debian provided timely security updates to all software in Stable. Now I know that this is not the case...

Re: Criticizing Debian against the rules?

This question is for the moderators. I read the stated "reason":
Topic locked due to getting too silly.
I think a more detailed explanation is appropriate. What's getting silly? Which rules were violated and by whom?

Criticizing Debian against the rules?

Is criticizing Debian against the rules of these forums?

Please explain why this topic's been closed: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=150626

Re: [SOLVED] Only a tiny fraction of vulnerabilities get fixed in Debian Stable?

Some people care about shining light on some facts they are obsessed with more than they care about the social consequences of speaking out. If the security of Linux is as bad as he says, and he speaks about it, do you not think that "certain members" of the community will not react very ...

KDE can't change screen resolution in gnome-boxes

I'm trying a bunch of alternative desktops that come with Debian 11 in a VM (gnome-boxes), that itself runs on Debian 11. All of the desktops I tried (XFCE, Gnome Flashback, Cinnamon) can change the screen resolution, but if I do it in KDE, the screen just flickers a bit and gives up -- doesn't even...

Audio with NVidia drivers seems to be borked

Sometimes, I'm playing a video file (using Totem), and if I pause it, and resume playing, the audio becomes silent for a few seconds or longer. Is this a known/common issue, and if so, is there a fix?

I'm using HDMI audio, with NVidia drivers, on Debian 11.

Re: Why I've stopped using Debian.

Not really. Capacitors degrade over time due to chemical reactions, just like batteries. They do degrade, but IDK if they are prone to failing within hours/minutes of being used again, as opposed to simply not working when you decide to take them out of storage. If so, that would indeed explain thi...

@scruffyeagle, have you heard of firmware malware?

More recently, other countries started using this too.

Re: Why I've stopped using Debian.

The idea that Debian killed three laptops in a row is rather implausible. Sounds more like a hardware failure, or the batteries were dead. Would they boot to BIOS? Debian killing 3 machines in a row is implausible. 3 similar hardware failures in a row are even more implausible. The same bad install...

Re: Best way to run the latest Firefox on Debian 11?

Ubuntuzilla (unfortunate name) works. It involves installing an external repository. https://www.unixmen.com/ubuntuzilla-easy-way-install-latest-mozilla-products/ Is it not a little bit dangerous to trust binary blobs and/or software from little-known third parties? There were 12 cases of malware i...

1. He makes a sensational claim and offers nothing to back it up. I agree, but he's not a random kook. Have you built anything that has a Wikipedia page? Are you ranting on something that's in your area of expertise? If so, I'll pay attention even if you don't back up your claims. 2. His Twitter ac...

Re: Only a tiny fraction of vulnerabilities get fixed in Debian Stable?

Hallvor, I don't think doing research and contacting Debian developers Are Debian users encouraged to post in developer forums or mailing lists when they have questions? I think not. (To clarify: I'm a developer. My software is in Debian, even. But I'm not a Debian developer) fits into the attentio...

These links don't give you the answer to my original question: (1) the overall stats are unclear, (2) many/some CVEs are on MITRE, but not in Debian's tracker.

Compare these two and see if you still agree with him: I didn't say I agreed with him. I'm just asking a question here. https://www.cvedetails.com/product/36/Debian-Debian-Linux.html?vendor_id=23 https://www.debian.org/security/2021/ These don't seem to show what percentage is fixed vs unfixed. Re: Only a tiny fraction of vulnerabilities get fixed in Debian Stable?

https://www.debian.org/security/ Have a look. I looked at it, and also the security FAQ. I don't think they explicitly say that all MITRE CVE fixes that apply to "main" get backported. One side's implying (?) it's 100%. The other side's saying it's a "tiny subset". They can't bo...
