Re: [solved]Cronjob not running, need help

I pulled that one off line after just the bare /mnt/raid/scripts/testups.sh didn't work and left no errors in journalctl

fair enough on the correction though, thanks

Re: Cronjob not running, need help

meh, screw the cronjob.. I just wrote a systemd service and have it wanted by multi-user.

still don't know why the cron didn't work, but thats the nice thing about linux... more than 2 ways to get things done.

[solved]Cronjob not running, need help

OK.. been working on some scripts to get info into files I can read as a non-admin (mainly to display in my conky output). I have a couple crontab entries that are working perfectly.. I also have one that isn't working at all. @reboot sleep 30 /mnt/raid/scripts/testups.sh & This script runs a wh...

[Software] How do I disable orca screen reader on the logon screen

Hello, I'm still relatively new to the whole linux thing, but I'm trying to learn. I'm having an oddball situation that I suspect is a traipse for someone else to fix and it just has me stumped. I have a bluetooth headset (sony wh-1000xm3) hooked into my system via a bt usb adapter (asus bt500). My ...

Re: Desktop -Cinnamon

Are you at the correct runlevel? if you do a sudo systemctl get-default does it return graphical.target? If you do a sudo runlevel does it return N 5? runlevel will tell you your current target/runlevel. If it doesn't return N 5, you're not at the correct run level for your graphical environment (0 ...

Re: Unable to stream video over samba

Since they're both Linux systems, my advise would be to use NFS as it's much faster en more reliable than samba... Samba is intended for using a Windows network share. Don't use it between Linux systems. This isn't a guarantee.. I'm running omv on one of my pi's, and read is within 1-2 mb/s between...

Re: Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

One last followup... BTRFS was only giving me about 500mb/s read and write, confirmed with DD, Kdiskmark, and FIO. I knew it was experimental, but that is horrible. DISKS checks raw device vs. through the fs.. hence the difference. Rebuilt it with ext4. I'm seeing a genuine read of 8179MB/s and a wr...

Re: Open Media Vault (OMV) on Debian

Both LearnLinuxTV and NetworkChuck installed the OMV on a Raspberry Pi running a 'Lite' version of Raspberrian. That's why I don't understand why the OMV wouldn't load. My questions are, do I need to install a 'Lite' version of Debian, can I install a "Lite" version, should I look for mor...

Re: Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

I learned how to install it on a Raid. I learned how to create a raid in linux. That's what I learned... I wont touch lvm in a corporate environment .. Then again I'm not using software raid in a corporate environment either, I'm using sans and letting their storage pools handle the redundancy vs. d...

Re: Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

Isn't the very purpose of RAID to mask the effects of a drive failure ? Umm.. no, or raid 0 would never exist. It was originally about creating extra space with cheap disks. There are performance gains in this case that actually let me exceed the pcie 4x bus I'm using... The raid 5 was so that if a...

Re: Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

Welp, that went pretty well... have the efi and my home directory sitting on my lil 250gb drive. I've used DD to clone it to my nvme usb stick and tested that to as a boot device as a backup. I do have to make sure I'm not leaving it unplugged for a year, but it's likely I'm just gonna leave it slap...

Re: Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

so it's possible to have 3 partitions for efi on the raided disks, just before the raided partitions... and keep a copy of the efi on each.. one fails and it just boots off the next one in order. Fair enough. Then just have the SW raid for the second partitions on each drive. I had thought about tha...

Re: Open Media Vault (OMV) on Debian

I just setup omv on a raspberry pi using raspbian lite. This may not apply.. so pinch of salt, but the install script I used would NOT let me install omv if there was a gdm installed... I tried with plain raspbian before giving up and going lite. This may be a quirk of it on the pi, but it's debian ...

Re: Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

This single point doesn't effect uptime unless you load everything on it. More than one way to slice and dice. If this disk is only used for the efi partition... it's got 0 relevance for uptime, and only down time is if it fails a reboot. Backing that partition up.. say a few gb partition for efi s...

Re: Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

Not so convenient when you care about downtime. If you don't... why then use RAID at all ? An extra SSD for boot is more expensive than no extra SSD. To simply learn the technology and for a little speed boost. Because I can. I don't need to justify the use of raid honestly... The system has the ab...

Re: Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

Thanks.. EFI partition is easy enough. I still plan on having my sata ssd be the boot drive. The difference in boot times between my nvme and my sata ssd's is small enough that it's a non issue... This makes me rather happy. I'll let yall know how it goes.. hopefully I'll be up and running Sunday. S...

[sovled] Installing Debian to a Raid 5 setup

OK.. I know I'm not doing something the most basic, but this should be 100% doable. I'm going to be rebuilding my system. I have 3x 1tb nvme drives that I want to raid 5. I also have a 250gb ssd that I'll be using as a boot drive (mounted as /boot). I will be using Debian 11.5, the latest iso from t...

Re: General Resolution: Non-Free Firmware. Call for votes :-)

More than "one or two" - I repeat:
The one or two was a bit on the sarcastic side of an understatement.. it was meant to be tongue in cheek. If I was a betting man, I'd wager over 80% of installs are out there using non-free

Re: General Resolution: Non-Free Firmware. Call for votes :-)

Honestly the installer is just a way to get the system.. why not just present a radial button that allows for non-free firmware to be used or not and if non-free is selected download the missing firmware that is needed? I guess the biggest gotcha there would be the nic if it requires non-free.. so i...

Re: Wifi firmware installed, but no where found.

@NorthEast Yeah, I had guessed that but I've only used intel nics so I wasn't 100% sure, that is why I added in the rtw8821c comment. Literally just trying to see if the firmware is exactly where it needs to be and does actually exist and is being loaded or not... Thanks for the correction
