Re: [Solved] Should I recommend Debian to a friend who has no Linux experience?
I don't like to feel being stalked. Most of the issues that I am interested probably should be discussed in mailing lists anyway. Definitely not here. I am out. You've posted twice in this thread, and the 2nd time you falsely accused me of stalking you out of the blue, and without presenting eviden...

Re: [Solved] Debian 12 - WPA Supplicant Setup
what did that earn me? Just a scolding. It wasn't a scolding, just a guidance, I'm sorry you took it that way. Your experience is welcome. Judging by the reaction I got, I didn't take it that way, so I've edited the post, since it was falsely claimed to be off topic. This kind of thing is why I sto...

Re: [Solved] Debian 12 - WPA Supplicant Setup
Hello, How is my post off topic? It's about networking, same thing the OP had issues with. [..] The current topic is "Debian 12 - WPA Supplicant Setup", your message is about "iwd is far better than iwd supplicant". If you wish to share your personal experience about iwd versus ...

Re: [Solved] Debian 12 - WPA Supplicant Setup
Hello, Sorry to rez an old thread, but my 2 cents: iwd is far better than WPA supplicant . [..] Thank you for sharing your experience, but this is almost a year old discussion and seems off topic. You may considering opening a new discussion about your new topic. How is my post off topic? It...

Re: Rules Forcing Posts to Be Reviwed
Also one of my posts made it to the " Best Threads of the Week " so another yay! Glad to be here. This one rather :D Welcome! Probably won't get read. Woe to whom doth not read  Unrelated, but let's say you have to review an important legal or financial document. Or a TOS/EULA fo...

Re: Should I recommend Debian to a friend who has no Linux experience?
The biggest problem, is with the nVidia graphics cards. That applies to Unstable and Testing because of regular kernel upgrades. Every time a new kernel point release occurs, it takes a little bit of time for Nvidia drivers to catch up and release a compatible version. It's less an issue for Nouvea...

Re: Should I recommend Debian to a friend who has no Linux experience?
* We have been running a probono Linux workshop for retired professionals for many years. We used to use Ubuntu but because its initram image has problems with certain mainboards we have switched to Debian since the bkworm days of Sid. Our experience may be helpful for those who would like to share...

Re: Should I recommend Debian to a friend who has no Linux experience?
Edit: Actually I am going to change my mind on this for now. I probably added to this debate far too soon in hindsight. I could just change what I wrote above but instead I'll be transparent and just add to it. I am still hitting things in Debian (although most likely common to Linux in general) th...

Re: Should I recommend Debian to a friend who has no Linux experience?
Hi Enigma83! Recommend Debian Linux to your friend! :) And I also recommend your friend to personally visit the Debian Forum, friends will always help. He initially chose Pop! OS, but moved on to Arch. I won't try to convince him again to give Debian another go, he's his own man and makes his own c...

Re: [Software] Programmatically enable Numlock key on boot?
KDE Plasma has under the Keyboard section of Settings: - Turn on - Turn off - Leave unchanged I guess "Leave unchanged" retains the BIOS setting. But I'm not using KDE, or any DE, so it's irrelevant. You basically just backed up what I've already said, that certain DEs can have their own ...

Re: [Software] Programmatically enable Numlock key on boot?
I did read somewhere that X11 has something to do with NumLock. Previously (no longer), I was running LXQT with the SDDM display/login manager. When powering on, I could see my external keyboard's NumLock light self-activate, which seemed to imply that the BIOS setting was doing its' job. It remaine...

[Installation] UEFI boot entry not generated, despite installation being successful
So, I recently swapped out my laptop's SSD to a smaller 1TB, with the intention of single booting Debian only, without Windows. The ultrabook is Dell XPS 13 9360. The partition layout is simple, I manually created it in Parted Magic before installing from the Bookwork netinstall iso. It consists of ...

Re: [Software] Necessary conditions to exploit CVE-2021-3612 (joystickdriver)
Do you have any gaming controllers? Xbox, PlayStation, Logitech, etc? It seems that if the exploit targets joysticks, then not having that hardware attached to your PC would logically make you not at risk.

Re: [Software] [Virt Manager] QEMU guest agent not working in VMs
This is very contradictory..."should be used on the host", and then apt-cache's description "it is not used on the host". My understanding is that it's meant to be installed on the host, to facilitate guest agent communication between the host (Debian) and guest (whatever OS it ...

Re: [Software] [Virt Manager] [Solved] QEMU guest agent not working in VMs
Here are my notes on how to get good performance from a Windows virtual machine and without having to play around as root: Download virtio-win-0.1.229.iso (sha256 c88a0dde34605eaee6cf889f3e2a0c2af3caeb91b5df45a125ca4f701acbbbe0) Download Win10_22H2_EnglishInternational_x64.iso (sha256 3ac5522f9db9f...

Re: [Software] [Virt Manager] QEMU guest agent not working in VMs
You have a Windows guest and Debian host? And you installed the guest agent on the Debian host? Correct. qemu-guest-agent should be used on the host: $ apt-cache show qemu-guest-agent ... Install this package on a system which is running as guest inside qemu virtual machine. It is not used on the h...

Re: [Software] [Virt Manager] QEMU guest agent not working in VMs
I'm going to tag this thread as solved, because I've figured it out. CwF, I think you may be right, Linux guests may not need the package. When I booted Manjaro from a live ISO, I was getting the 'guest agent is not available" message, it couldnt be ticked, and things that are supposed to work ...
