Re: [Software] Asus ROG and keyboard sleep rgb animation. Disable?

I doubt Debian can do anything there; operating system has no control of it's hardware while suspended. Possibly UEFI is set to have illumination turned on?
Check UEFI settings if it can be disabled

Re: Debian's Community on discord is back

I can't help but to feel that Mumble would be much more appropriate for a Debian community . Never would I use proprietary software to discuss Debian. If we can call it "software", heh Nothing more but (yet another) heavy-weight ugly Electron one-service client that's bricked once their s...

Re: [Software] Blocking vertical videos?

The first (blocking vertical videos) seems possible, the latter (blocking such inside conventional ratios) not so. At least not without sacrificing months for implementing it
If blocking only vertical videos is enough, go on. Otherwise I recommend leaving such spaces

Re: [Software] Blocking vertical videos?

I find it pretty interesting to block videos on such basis... And doubt such solution exists. So if ya need it, I see only making it up yerself But I believe that avoiding Big Tech platforms is more than enough, as this radioactive crap concentrates mainly there. Personally I dunno remember last tim...

Re: [Software] drm error messages in dmesg

Which is de-facto a integrated GPU, as no device can display image without working GPU
Back to first question I mean, if it doesn't show any artifacts on the screen (like flickering, strips) and no GUI crashes happen, these errors may be ignored

Does GPU card itself works or not? If it works, I think it can be ignored

Re: Macbook Pro 2019 with BCM4364 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter, with Debian 12 (Weekly): But, NO WiFi

No firmware installed, I suppose. Try apt install firmware-brcm80211 As it seems to have firmware for BCM4366, which maybe will work for BCM4364 as well I recommend to avoid Broadcom next time as they are overall crappy wireless cards with firmware/drivers of questionable licensing, which makes 'em ...

Re: Latest Debian Stable won't install on Asus Prime B450M-A2

Going with 13 will change nothing, I believe. My B550M (so newer by one generation) had no problems with Debian 12 Is the install media good? I've also stumbled with such behavior of installers and always happened to be it I'd try to burn / flash (whenever ye use opticals or flash drives) installer ...

Re: Obscure, forgotten hardware

I no longer have them, but these old Dell media center style PCs were probably the earliest systems I had ever used. I see ye had pretty a lot of this stuff. Did they have any purpose or were just sitting around? What fate they faced? I still have a Microfiche console. Can ya tell more about it? So...

Obscure, forgotten hardware

Do you possess any kind o' hardware we can qualify as obscure, unknown and forgotten? What's it? How it landed into yer hands? Does it still work? In my case I have this tiny (8") Arcus monochrome CRT which I got for 10zł (about 2,2€ / 3$) in unknown condition back in 2023. Plastics are yellowe...

Re: What free and opensource games do you play?

Overally I rarely play games, but it's what I play when I decide to do so: Ace Of Penguins (ace-of-penguins) game set, basically penguin-themed MS game set (included in i.e. Windows XP) with nice additions (incl. at least 2 additional games). Purely X11 (no graphical toolkits like GTK used) Freedroi...

Re: Uunnecessary and unfriendly requirements

Just one must not think that GNOME/KDE will run smoothly on it FWIW, KDE Plasma runs very well indeed on the X230 or pretty much anything else from that hardware generation, provided you give the system a reasonable amount of RAM. As for GNOME... I've said my piece on GNOME many times before. Why i...

Re: Uunnecessary and unfriendly requirements

If it's too difficult for the person you're trying to help, they should buy a new computer. At ten years old, the current one has done its duty and deserves to retire. Sorry but that only applies to Windows Mother has Lenovo x230 which runs Mint pretty smoothly. It's a laptop from 2013 My "imp...

Re: Uunnecessary and unfriendly requirements

I only partially agree, I remember many attempts like Asus Eee pc to sell pre-installed ubuntu, it just didn't sell, consumers saw it as a low-cost solution with an inferior OS. If you don't conquer the average non-tech user, gnu/linux will never leave the low market share it has for the last twent...

Re: [Off-Topic] Help wanted: Writing a beginner's book to Debian

Second, no one wants to read instructions. It's not our natural way to learn. We learn by sitting around a fire while someone demonstrates how to make an arrowhead and describes it verbally. There's a reason we still use teachers in school. Most Linux newbies want YouTube videos, not tutorials. I'd...

Re: A "toy" server I could mess with?

Didn't go with that IBM in the end, I think it's not worth risking about 50€ into machine that may die in near future and itself has unknown controllers anyway No luck with Opteron-based either, people simply want way too much for over-decade hardware and there's really nothing that would fill my ne...

Re: Uunnecessary and unfriendly requirements

software like Skype that didn't work well after the flatpak installation, forcing me to uninstall it and reinstall it with Snaps Skype is non-free crap possibly build on Electron (as otherwise MS wouldn't even think about porting Skype here), which is itself crappy. It's not Debian fault that Micro...

Re: A "toy" server I could mess with?

I've found a IBM x3250 Type 4365 for 200zł (~47€) and thinking if should I go with it. It's said to be fully working, contains both bays and has one 300GB SAS disk. But it has Broadcom NICs, unknown (I mean, can't find anything on it) RAID controller and being of my age I'm afraid how long it'll sur...

A "toy" server I could mess with?

[Not posting in "Hardware" as it's not Debian-specific; I want to play with random unixes on it] Playing exclusively with desktop-class x86 hardware got pretty boring after years (especially when newer hardware becomes more and more restricted), so I'm thinking of getting something more a...
