Re: [Software] Need a disk editor recommendation

Thank you LinuxOS. I have also found the wxHexEditor and the DiskEditor. I will need to read the notes on compiling wxHexEditor; not having see a .run extension I will hunt down the instruction for running or installing DiskEditor.

Re: [Software] where is the xfce4-weather-plugin?

If the above does not work, then go into Synaptic and search for xfce4-weather-plugin and see if it is installed, probably is. Uninstall and reinstall the plugin.

At the bottom left of the Synaptic screen, you can select Custom Filters and then Broken and see what may be broken and needs fixing.

Re: [Software] Need a tool for video analysis

Thanks CwF, I will take a look at MPV first and then the others. I know I have a bit of a learning curve here, so I am prepared for that mentally.

Re: [Software] where is the xfce4-weather-plugin?

OK...you right clicked on the Panel and selected Add New Item, and then selected Weather Update? If so, that should put the icon in your panel. Once there, you do as @arzgi suggested and right click on that icon. Then select Properties, Location tab, and then Change and force a manual change. It ...

[Software] Need a tool for video analysis

I need recommendations for a tool that will analyze videos from dash cameras. The most common format is .mp4 but could be others; I would like to see frame counts, FPS, dropped frames, and buffering issues. Something with a GUI would be nice but I can work with command line in Terminal.

Thanks

Re: Xfce - messed up config

What Bloom said. :)

Select your Settings Manager, and then select Appearance. At the bottom of the Appearance window you will see an option for 'Set matching Xfwm4 theme if there is on'. Enable or disable it as you please. You can then 'move' back and select Window Manager and then select on the ...

Re: Would you recommend Debian to a brand new Linux user? Why/Why not?

Maybe Mint is more user friendly than Debian, but Mint is derived from Ubuntu is derived from Debian. Why not take the original?

The lineage means zero, especially to a new user, and there are worlds of differences between Mint and Debian Bullseye. The help here is excellent, however, folks ...

Re: Why do you use debian?

Well, once I moved into the retirement center, I found a bunch of retired lady IT types and apparently they dig a man with a hard drive that has Debian on it. I frequently get asked over to help with a new install, or upgrade, sometimes package management, or a server refresh...and dinner. Long live ...

Re: Bookworm "Point Release Number" - How to fetch it.

Thanks for that, I was wondering how to check. Tried everything but the debian_version. <head-slap>

I did have trouble with the sources.list file and the entry, don't exactly recall what I did wrong, might have been the use of 'stable', but eventually got it right and bumped up to 12.7.

Re: [Request] What's gone wrong with the New Posts filter?

Not that it bothers me, but I am still getting notifications for older posts, I had I believe 4 notifications today. I did do the 'reset' for new posts and that seems to be working fine. The notifications are not a big deal for me, just wanted to mention it.

Re: New hardware compatibility question (CPU, RAM, motherboard)

The Nvidia wattage I quoted was from Nvidia, and based on an Intel i9 processor, so you could have lower wattage on a non-Nvidia board and other brand cpu.

The Intel issues are sort of related, depending on ones luck and perspective. The microcode issue was permitting a higher than acceptable ...

Re: New hardware compatibility question (CPU, RAM, motherboard)

The video card alone requires 600 watts. You should figure in the power requirements for the MB, memory, wifi, drives, external ports, etc. to make sure your 750 psu is enough.

For sure Intel screwed the pooch on the 13th and 14th gen processors, K and non K. Supposedly there will be a microcode ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Computer monitors: What criterias affects eye strain?

I have a Samsung LS24AG30 monitior, which is the 24 inch G30 gaming monitor, set at 120hz / 1920 x1080 and have no issues. I would suggest looking at:

Ambient lighting
Brightness / Contrast
Eye Saver Mode
House Hold LEDs lamps causing issues
Move monitor to onboard graphics if one exist

Might ...

Re: [Industry] BSODs impacting banks, airlines, TV broadcasters, supermarkets, and many more businesses worldwide

Hmmm....might be a MS fault as well. Perhaps CrowdStrike fixed an undisclosed issue by MS. Win 10 users will never know, as their OS would be silently patched to fix the MS side of it.

My Debian Bookworm is working just fine. :)

Obviously, I am a basic user of Linux and as I am soon to be the owner of a new iPad Pro M4 I need to get iTunes on my Bookworm 12.5.

Re: [Solved] Login without user name

Not being motivated to go out and do some gardening, just yet anyway, here are two settings in my lightdm.conf file that show my user name and prompts only for a password.

greeter-hide-users=false ... take note of the missing hash/octothorp sign. If he is the only user of the PC then only his name ...
