You can install Nemo on KDE, but do not need to set it as the default file manager. You can launch Nemo from the menu, pin it to the panel, or create a desktop shortcut, and use it on an as-needed basis if you need to access files as root. The AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem extension for GNOME should solve your problem, but depending on what version or distro is being used, you may have to restart extensions at every login.
