Re: Jessie is now "frozen"
So broken systemd is "stable"? Time to pack things and move to an other unix land, I guess. No, that isn't what the man posted. He posted that it's "frozen," not "stable." If there are still issues with systemd, no doubt they will be resolved before the release goes St...

Re: Any old timers still around? :)
I've been here since "Sarge" was Debian's Stable release. Don't know if that counts or not. Yes, the systemd controversy's caused a bit of drama lately, although I haven't noted any "rats leaving a sinking ship" phenomenon going on. Still, as a user I'm not in a position to monit...

Re: I have a question about a custom debian
Not to hurt your feelings, but what you're talking about is wanting to create that amounts to a "vanity distribution." Those are distros which have no real reason for being other than to flatter the vanity of those who created them, usually with minimal effort on the part of someone who's ...

Re: nvidia drivers installing themself
I'll be more blunt and state that I flatly don't believe this. There is no possible way in Debian for Nvidia (or other proprietary drivers) to simply "install themselves." Couldn't happen, not in Jessie, not in Sid, not in Wheezy, not in any other distro Debian's ever produced/released. Wh...

Re: Big mistake. Upgraded to Jessie too soon...
It isn't an "upgrade" until Debian releases Jessie as its stable release. Nor is if entirely accurate to say that Jesxie is "buggy." At best that is misleading. Jessie is currently Testing. That means that no one at Debian is yet satisfied that it is ready to take its eventual pl...

Re: [Skype] Can't fix dependencies
You cannot properly install i386 packages on a Debian amd64 system without first enabling multiarch support. See: https://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/Implementation?highlight=%28multiarch%29 . The entire procedure for installing 32-bit Skype on 64-bit Debian Wheezy is listed here: https://wiki.debian....

Re: Debian Is Back To Discussing Init Systems, Freedom of Ch
As I see things this has absolutely nothing to do with "freedom of choice," and those who claim it does either have no concept of what that phrase actually means, or else are deliberately trying to obfuscate the issue. See: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... 93#p557270.

Re: Preserve freedom of choice of init systems
I've posted several times to these forums to express my belief that if Debian is swtiching to systemd merely because Gnome developers have chosen to pull a power play on any distro which features a Gnome DE, then I think Debian is making a mistake to allow the tail to wag the dog in that way. Having...

Re: VirtualBox and VmWare extremely slow
What the exact problem was originally I can't say. I can say, however, that installing software from other sites and not from Debian's repos is a bad idea and usually leads to a broken system eventually. Adding third-party repos to Debian's is a bad idea too for the same reasons. If Debian meets you...

Re: Debian Is Back To Discussing Init Systems, Freedom of Ch
I find that encouraging, especially if it's adopted. I have nothing against systemd. It works fine in my Jessie VM. What I've found troubling about it is that Debian seems to be considering adopting it across the board simply because the Gnome developers have chosen to make their DE dependent on it....

Re: New PC
You might get away with that, as long as the filesystems and mount points as listed in /etc/fstab exist in your new system, and assuming that you haven't installed one or more proprietary hardware drivers, or if you have, that said drivers also work for your new hardware. It won't hurt anything to i...

Re: Skype with Debian 7.6 Pulseaudio
Oddly, I had to do none of those things to get Skype to work perfectly on Debian 7.6. All I had to do was to download the .deb file from Skype, install it with the dpkg -i <skypefilename.deb> command (with the real filename instead of my little placeholder), and then run apt-get -f install and pulse...

Re: Enlightenment please :)
For Enlightenment specifically, the OP might want to check out the eLive distro ( http://www.elivecd.org/ ) which is based on Debian. It is not Debian, but merely derived from it like so many others. I've read a few good things about it, however, from those who like or wished to try Enlightenment. I...

Glads your issue is solved. Still, I wonder why you posted it in the Debian forums in the first place since you gave as part of your sources.list http://packages.linuxmint.com/. That would lead me to believe that you are running some version of Linux Mint. You may be running LMDE, but even if you ar...

Re: Login screen not appearing after upgrade to Jessie
First, changing from Stable to Testing is not an "upgrade." It is changing from the released, stable distribution to a collection of packages which, until finally officially released, may or may not work as advertised and may well not work at all. Testing certainly isn't Debian's way of qu...

Re: Bastille Linux doesn't seem to be offered in synaptic
Nowhere near all available software (of the free software variety) is packaged and maintained by Debian and therefore is not to be found in Debian's repos. I think Debian offers far, far more software possibilities than most Linux distros, but that does not include all. This is largely, I believe, d...

Re: Default Jessie DE to be Gnome3?
:( According to the distrowatch article: This is particularly based on accessibility and to some extent systemd integration. http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20140929#news Yes, I read that, and in part that's what troubles me. Gnome developers, with their insistence on the new Gnome3 paradig...

Re: "Failed to Fetch" Repositories. Please Assist. Much Sad
It's highly unlikely that your problem is being caused by the people running the servers/mirrors. Much more likely is a faulty internet connection.
