Converting Bullseye from physical to virtual

When I get my next computer later this year, I'd like to convert my present Bullseye system from a physical system to a VirtualBox guest. There's plenty of advice out there for converting a MS Windows box from physical to virtual, but there seems to be nothing for converting a Linux box. How do I go...

Re: Unable to change desktop environment after Bullseye upgrade

The problem is solved, and in a very unexpected way. I tried holding down the Alt key, but that does nothing on the login screen. A change I made when upgrading to Bullseye was changing the gdm3 config to disable the user list. Normally I type my name and password in very fast, and I can about do it...

Unable to change desktop environment after Bullseye upgrade

I have three desktop environments installed; MATE is the last one used. All was fine with Buster. I upgraded to Bullseye, and now it is no longer possible to choose a desktop environment. Once I finish booting, there is no gear icon or any other visible way to choose DE. If the gear icon appears at ...

alternative to pdfedit

pdfedit was silently* deleted when I upgraded to jessie. I downloaded the source and discovered it hasn't been updated in five years, and it uses Qt3 -- probably why the package was dropped. I'd rather not have to keep a wheezy guest just for one or two applications, and I really do not want to buy ...

reconfigure or reinstall Xorg

I started with a Pentium4 system with a FX5500 AGP card and now have a i3 with integrated Intel video (Auburndale). The new motherboard is ASUS P7H55-M PRO. The monitor is a Acer AL1916 (LCD) with only VGA input. I have been using the nVidia proprietary drivers installed the "Debian way" (...

You can search for files with the find command.

Sendmail's config file is sendmail.cf.

mkdir /media/floppy
mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy

With the above, no fstab entry is needed. Since you don't use floppies much, I wouldn't bother with making an entry.

Don't forget to umount when you're done.

Re: Jigdo or Bit Torrent?

Jigdo creates a file called xxxx.iso.tmp. You are saying get the bit torrent software, get the .torrent file for the archive in question, copy the xxxx.iso.tmp to xxxx.iso, and then run bit torrent. Is that correct? That approach should work. When I wanted a .avi that I couldn't complete with WinMX...

I've not used jigdo in a long time. You might want to try BitTorrent instead. If you have even a partial .iso file, the BT client can pick it up and you won't have to start over from zero. Make a copy of your .iso (just in case) and download the .torrent file. Set your client's download directory to...

Having 2 gigs of RAM is ok. There'll be no issues unless you want to exceed 4 gigs.

Your motherboard and CPU should work, but I don't know whether they would yet work to their full potential. If you choose sarge(stable), you'll probably want to upgrade the kernel.

Install xinetd and accept telnet connections through it. xinetd also has access control, so you can allow only localhost through its config. Despite its name, xinetd has nothing to do with X, and it's usable regardless of whether X is installed.

1. Type rm -i instead of rm alone. Or you can alias rm=rm -i
But beware that typing rm -f will override the -i.

2. alias ll=ls -l

How to set up your aliases depends on which shell you use.

You can use dpkg, but you'll probably find it easier to use aptitude (console) or Synaptic (X). Either way, you certainly don't have to update your whole distribution.

It sounds like you're using Sarge/stable. If so, the easiest way would be to use the backport. See http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=4525 for instructions.

A packet sniffer is one thing you'll probably want. Here's a good one: http://www.ethereal.com/ You can install it as a Debian package, but go to that site first to learn about it and be sure it meets your needs. It sounds like you're trying to make a honeypot. I'd also suggest: http://www.securityf...

Just something to remember: ALSA is the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. aRts is an abstraction layer, people on *BSD may still need it. Correct. I have FreeBSD on another system, and I know it's OSS-based. You can have ALSA with FreeBSD's Linux "emulation", but I don't know what restri...

I more or less agree with emmanuel_halbwachs. There's too much we're waiting for to hold it back arbitrarily. Full AMD64 support, X.org, and so on. Just days ago, there was a discussion on the S3 Savage mailing list where someone was told X.org is required for the 3D support he wanted, but he said h...
