$HOME shared from Samba server
Samba for home drives in Windows is well documented. but I want a my $HOME under Debian shared from a samba server, I can't find anything on this. Is here someone who runs such a configuration? My goal is to have the same home directory in Windows and Linux, that will save me some reboots and it jus...

Re: Linksys RVS4000 VLAN setup
It's fixed, it does now what it needs to do. Below is my working config. Trunking worked too, but that wasn't necessary because the VLANs didn't have to transfer to other routers/switches. http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6005/screenshotat20120115115.png http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6005/screens...

Yup, you got it. I had been grabbing gnome-shell without recommends from experimental just to check it out. But now I install fonts-cantarell gconf-editor mutter gnome-shell nautilus gnome-session gnome-control-center gnome-themes gnome-themes-standard without recommends. That provides a complete d...

I haven't actually used Gnome 3 (I'm on Squeeze) and all my irritations I've posted are based on the posted experiences of others. I am sure if I were to use it.....  Yeah, yeah... How do you wish Debian Wheezy Stable would be?
I placed this in offtopic because this is just a wishlist discussion. How do you wish Debian Wheeze Stable would be? I'm wondering what people are wishing for. :) I started to wonder and hoping recently, how would Wheezy be in about 6 months? By then Wheezy is probably frozen. So what are you hoping...

KDE is bloated, as is gnome, but it's obvious as to why it's bloated if you use it - features, bells whistles, etc for those that want such...

Off topic but why not just nab the latest nvidia driver from nvidia's site instead of using Wheezy? Well there were some other things that didn't worked the way I wanted it to work. Iptables-persistent didn't work with ipv6 (old buggy version), PulseAudio wasn't easily integrated (I needed to recom...

I'm amazed by the fact that the Gnome (and other) developers still have not understood some basic things about software, and what makes software "good". Please don't mistake this post for regular "bitching". I'm actually trying to be constructive. First a bit about myself: I've ...

Re: Block nmap scans or hide ports?
Sorry, I forgot this topic and that I promised to give you some more information. To protect yourself against exploits check out: AppArmor, Grsecurity or SELinux. I recommend Grsecurity because it's quite easy to implement it. You do have to recompile a vanilla kernel. You can try this tutorial, but...

Re: Passwords easily retrieved trough Seahorse
You can get all the passwords via a memory dump, also with the Iceweasel password method. Some people also argue that that's also a reason why Seahorse shouldn't be more secure, because the passwords can be attained via memory dump. Which is total crap, security should be applied when it's possible....

Try psad and fwsnort. Don't forget to configure them. Also search for some iptable tweaks. I'll post some when I'm at my pc. I've got more tips for you.

Re: Passwords easily retrieved trough Seahorse
Ridicules... The passwords should be stored like in Iceweasel/Firefox. When you unlock them you can use them in applications, but when you want to view the passwords then you should be prompted with the keyring password again. I'll try to propose this simple security feature to the developers. It wo...

Passwords easily retrieved trough Seahorse
Hi, I always had a minimal Debian GNOME installation. But a while ago I had to install the gnome-core package because of the recent GNOME 3 transition. That package fixed some missing dependencies that I needed. Now I've discovered the Seahorse package for the first time. This program freaks me out!...

Never mind, I switched back to Wheezy, much better this way, if there are no broken flash, nVidia or other important uploads again
