Re: [Software] fstab entry for swapfile on external drive
the swap partition can only be expanded into unallocated space that FOLLOWS the swap partition. In my case there is very little unallocated space following the swap partition, so no expansion is possible. I just did exactly that, i.e. *shrink sda1(/) *grow sda2 (extended) and move it to the left *g...

Re: [Software] fstab entry for swapfile on external drive
Why would it be a challenge? Your root looks like a plain-old ext4 partition to me, and moving or resizing such with gparted from a livecd is about as difficult as falling off a log. Actually, I tried that. I first reduced the size of sdb1 then tried to resize the swap partition. I think it doesn't...

Re: [Software] fstab entry for swapfile on external drive
I would question the need for that swap space versus the extra failure mode introduced by another boot dependency. I understand. My original thinking was that I could use that swap space for hibernation, but after doing some reading I find that a swap file cannot be used for hibernate, at least not...

[Software] fstab entry for swapfile on external drive
I am running Bookworm and have Bookworm installed on two separate drives (call them sda and sdb), plus I have a HDD that I use for backup. I recently upgraded my ram and want to increase swap space to 16GB. I have Bookworm installed on a SSD and there is a swap partition , but only 8GB. I have creat...

Re: [Discussion] So ... Debian 12 ... Nightmare or Glorious Bliss? (or you just wish to post ITT with ellipsis ...)
moved from Debian 11 bullseye to Debian 12 bookworm Before the first point release? I don't think so. Let the guinea pigs test for a bit first. @{guinea pigs}: thanks! I upgraded at RC2 (as I did with Bullseye, Buster, and Stretch). Absolutely no problems with the Bookworm upgrade, just a...

Re: [Testing - Bookworm] [SOLVED][Testing - Bookworm] OS-PROBER issue
I found the problem. Obviously a user error. There were two os-prober entries in /etc/grub.d. I think that for some reason os-prober had not been installed when I upgraded from Bullseye and when I installed the package it was put in /etc/grub.d . So when I did the latest upgrade and answered Yes to ...

[Testing - Bookworm] [SOLVED][Testing - Bookworm] OS-PROBER issue
I just did an update on Bookworm and there was a question about keeping the os-prober configuration or updating to the maintainers version. Like a dummy I answered Yes (default is No) and now the /boot/grub/grub.cfg has two entries for the second os. How can I correct this error on my part?

Re: tcl/tk escape oddities
Not trying intrude, but I was amazed to see that others are using tcl/tk. I'm not that much of a coder, so I can't help with the problem. Just wanted to say hey. I use Visual Tcl for all the tcl/tk programs I muck together.

Re: [Testing - Bookworm] Issue with update - missing package
Not sure how to handle the issue with root authorization for the package manager. There's nothing to sort out. From the menu the command is synaptic-pkexec and needs the user password for root rights. You can use a pkla rule (or new bookworm way) to eliminate the need for a password. I've documente...

[Testing - Bookworm] [SOLVED] Issue with update - missing package
I just update Bookworm on one of my systems (amd64, xfce, lightdm) and have a couple things that appear to have gone wrong, but apparently not serious. 1. The new kernel installed okay but the linux-headers-6.1.0-7-amd64 package (I think I got that right) did not install. 2. I tried to launch the Sy...

Re: [Software] Unable to change grub resolution
Interesting. I have GRUB-GFXMODE=1152x864, and it works fine. Did you update-grub after making the changes?
OOPS! Just re-read your post and see that you did indeed update-grub. My bad.

Re: [Testing - Bookworm] Synaptic no longer works
I am an idiot! Somehow the Synaptic Package Manager menu was set to hide from the menu. Sorry folks. Still don't know what happened with the fonts, but that will be a different post.

[Testing - Bookworm] [SOLVED] Synaptic no longer works
YIKES! I have no idea what happened but all of a sudden the Synaptic Package Manager no longer shows up in the xfce menu, and I can not launch it from a terminal. I get a message that I might be using Wayland, but I am using X11. What the heck might have happened and how can I fix it. Here is the me...

I assumed as much. Thanks.FreewheelinFrank wrote: ↑2023-03-18 20:56 It went into stable-security on 2023-03-15, so upgrades two weeks ago would be stuck with the older version until 102.9 goes into Testing (which it will).

Re: [Testing - Bookworm] Firefox ESR version
Firefox ESR 102.9 is in Sid. Are you sure you haven't upgraded to Sid? Edit: Wait! It's also in stable-security. You probably had it as a security update before the upgrade. https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/firefox-esr#bht.9f287ca5-160d-43ac-8da2-33e66b4d2b15.7 Thanks for the feedback. I was just loo...

[Testing - Bookworm] [SOLVED] Firefox ESR version
Here is a strange one. I had upgraded one of my drives to Bookworm about two weeks ago and the version of Firefox ESR installed was 102.8. I subsequently upgraded two more drives and the version of Firefox ESR is 102.9. However, when I try to update and upgrade the originally upgraded drive it says ...

Re: [Testing - Bookworm] BIG OOPS
I think I fixed it. The problem, as best I can tell, was with the realtek package r8168-dkms (?). For some reason during the upgrade I elected to not let the system make changes regarding that package, which is now deprecated. To fix the problem I simply used the Synaptic Package Manager to remove t...
