Kernel upgrade does not work ...

Just when I thought that my Debian 12 installation went so well two weeks ago. Now, the first kernel upgrade did not complete. I first tried the Gnome "Software" the manually apt upgrade or aptitude safe-upgrade, just errors. This is an all AMD machine: CPU: 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (-MT M...

Re: [Discussion] how do you install

My first choice is always a binary from Debian's repo. The one program different from that in my Debian 11 Mate desktop installation is Kdenlive. I have for years got my Kdenlive from Kdenlive as an appimage. Works well, only 200MB, and starts and runs as fast as a native binary. I have played with ...

Re: Can I install Buster on AMD Ryzen 7 3700 X machine ...

Iif that is still a problem with Debian 10.3, as it still is 4.19 kernel? Yes, it still an issue. Debian stable is so called because the package versions don't change. somebody got around it by installing minimal Buster Stable on an Intel machine, upgrading it to Testing, then moving that SSD to th...

Can I install Buster on AMD Ryzen 7 3700 X machine ...

I thought I'd ask before trying ... there was an issue trying to install Debian/Ubuntu on a third generation AMD processor machine. I know that this issue disappeared from the Ubuntus with upgrade to 5.x kernels, but I don't know if that is still a problem with Debian 10.3, as it still is 4.19 kerne...

Setting up firewall for mail server

I am converting our mail server to a "closed circuit" mail server, which will not attempt to send mail to world addresses other than specified in the host.txt file. Similarly, it should not accept mail from machines other than those in the hosts.txt. The server has a working sendmail for s...

64-bit or 32-bit version, reliability

Hello, Can anybody think of any reason why not to install the 64-bit version of 6.01 on a Dell R310 (64-bit Xeon) server? Used to be safer to always install 32-bit, and that is what our older servers are running. Also, I have had problems getting Debian 5.x to detect USB backup drives, there is simp...

Re: Samba shows in port scans

Now I got it the way I like. I had changed smb.conf to read: interfaces = 192.168.1.1/24 eth1 and bind interfaces only = yes I had restarted samba, but the samba ports still showed in a port scan by another linux box on the world address. However, now I rebooted the samba box whole operating system ...

Re: Samba shows in port scans

Yes, Ubuntu (this is 10.04) installs ufw firewall by default, however, it is not preconfigured to do anything as far as I can see. If I do iptables -L it shows just empty chains for INPUT OUTPUT FORWARD. Other servers, such as sshd etc. show in a port scan so portscan itself is not blocked. I have t...

Samba shows in port scans

I just noticed after installing a new server with samba that a portscan will show the samba used ports. This server has two interfaces, a world address eth0 and an intranet eth1. The samba ports show in scanning either interface, even after I changed samba to listen only to the intranet (192.168.x) ...

In /usr/share/doc/lilo-doc/NEWS.Debian.gz said this. lilo (1:22.8-6) unstable; urgency=low lilo may fail to boot with a large kernel+initrd. LILO trouble on Lenny

I ran into an unexpected situation with LILO on a new Debian 5.02 installation. I chose Lilo in the original installation, and didn't think much about it, the server booted fine several times. This server (IBM eServer 2 x Xeon) is spareserver to another box, a Mail and DNS server, IBM eServer 4 x Xe...

Which filesystem for quota, ext2 or ext3?

Hello,
Is there still a concern using ext3 filesystem when you plan to use disk quota, userquota, groupquota etc.?
This had something to do with the journaling mixing up the quota database ...
I can format the disks to ext2 if necessary, but rather not ..
Thanks for your help,

Re: Is Debian any better than Mandriva?

Has anyone used Mandriva, I just switched to Mandriva from Suse and I really enjoy the system but I use a laptop and have found a few bugs that I have not been able to work around. Also I have a few older Pentium 3 and 4 laptops will 5.0 work "out of the box" on these systems or is will I...

new to debian, a few questions

Hello; I am new to Debian, but have been operating rpm(RedHat Mandriva) based linuxes for years. I am installing new servers with Debian, and so far it is going extremely well. There is one thing I don't seem to find in the aptitude/apt- series of commands: in an RPM machine, after having installed ...
