Re: How do you image a disk with Linux/Debian? (dd is broken
I just recently had to clone my C: windows disk, which had grown too small. I had no trouble doing that at all with Clonezilla. Note that C-zilla will either clone a disk or create a disk image, as you choose. I strongly recommend it. There are a number of good tutorials that will show you how to se...

Re: Shoud i buy a Linux Laptop to save some money?
I have owned two System 76 laptops. Both have been quite good for my general computing purposes. S-76 ships with Ubuntu preloaded but it is a simple task to swap it out for the Linux of your choice if Ubuntu is not to your liking. Their support has been good the few times I have needed it. I have ru...

Re: Is there any problem if i install debian unstable/testin
And that is exactly how I did it kedaha, treating both Testing and Unstable as expendable, which is to say that at some point one or both will snarl. It is interesting to see how each is faring and what the future might hold for Stable. If I want a somewhat more stable sid then I install siduction. ...

Re: Debian 8 jessie xfce can't resume from suspend
I doubt your Intel graphics are any part of your problem. I am running a laptop so configured with Jessie and I have no problem at all. I would be very surprised if the particular DE you select makes any difference. The fact that suspend will not resume properly but hibernate does is interesting. Si...

Re: Not fully convinced to shift from Ubuntu into Debian
Look, if you are happy with Ubuntu stay there. There is nothing wrong with it and it is used by many people. If you do not like Unity you can do Mint, Xubuntu and on and on. Find one and be happy. Meanwhile I will be happy with Debian. I like Stable because it is exactly what its name says it is, da...

Re: What do you think of AntiX Linux distro?
I am running a current MX-14 32-bit pae. uname -a returns Linux 3.14-0.bpo.2-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.14.15-2~bpo70+1 (2014-08-21) i686 GNU/Linux. I have been running antiX for at least two years. I am not sure how long MX-14 has been on but I have had it on since it hit the streets. Your MX-14 full ...

Re: Will KDE5 ever come to Debian?
I tis starting to show up in siduction, but be careful. My siduction/KDE turned into a dysfunctional mess, so I now boot it with Xfce! Eager KDE folk might want to mark time a bit. The siduction forum is tracking this pretty well if you want to check there. They always post upgrade warnings and they...

Re: How to stay on testing now that Jessie's stable
I really think wizard1000 and kedaha pretty well nail it. In my experience, which goes back 6 years or so now, Debian Stable is exactly what its name says it is. So it is my standard suggestion to people who need to get work done and who do not want a lot of administrative fol-de-rol. If a person wa...

Re: Debian or CentOS 6?
CharmingNathan, if you are serious in your inquiry follow kiyop on this. He knows what he is talking about. For relatively non-technical users in particular, nothing does hardware detection and configuration better than Linux Mint. 17.1 Rebecca should give you a good chance. If you succeed live with...

Re: Looking for a Wheezy-friendly Printer
My HP gave up so out I went for a new printer/all-in-one. Came home with an Epson XP-810. Much more compact, whic h is good in my compact space, and it does first-rate quality on normal print settings. It uses five color cartridges including both Black and Photo-Black. Formware is available in .deb ...

Re: [solved] Jessie update/upgrade blew up Oct. 22
Thank you nixer, dpkg --configure -a solved the problem. For readers the key here is to get to the command-line or to a terminal so that dpkg can be run. It does its work quickly and you should be back up very shortly. Lesson I learned? apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade is a periodic ro...

Re: Jessie update/upgrade blew up Oct. 22
I do not have any way to get to terminal using the usual GUI interface. I can get there by doing Alt-F1 I think. As for updating/upgrading I do not do it all that frequently, typically once very two-three weeks? Whatever the frequency it ought to work. If it is a local problem on my machine obviousl...

[solved] Jessie update/upgrade blew up Oct. 22
They do call it Testing, after all, but I have not seen anything like this previously. I have been running Testing (64-bit, MATE desktop) for some time now with no more than small, easily repaired glitches. This morning I did apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade as I normally do. I did see...

Re: Slow startup
I had a very similar problem which was resolved when I found that the swap UUID did not match the swap UUID in my /etc/fstab file. Once the UUIDs were matched the problem was resolved.
Try checking yours and see if that helps.

Re: slow boot process after update to systemd
Sunrat thank you very much indeed. You taught me the utility of journalctl, which I did not know about at all and you correctly pointed to my swap file UUID as a potential source of the problem. Here is how mistakes are made. I had removed Testing from this machine for a time while I worked out some...

Re: slow boot process after update to systemd
Interesting thread. I am suffering the same problem on a System 76 machine that was designed to be Linux friendly. If I run systemd-analyze I get: Startup finished in 2.917s (kernel) + 3min 1.602s (userspace) = 3min 4.519s Oops, that cannot be good. I have used systemd analyze-blame to see what the ...

Re: gnome3 or xfce4
When I install/reinstgall Debian on a machine with four different distributions I find it helpful to do a net-install without the desktop package, which I prefer to install later. I also do my initial install without designating a swap file because I do not want Debian to change the swap UUID, somet...
