Re: Calibre won't start (Wheezy)

I got the same problem. Updating calibre to the version 0.7.50+dfsg-2 (now in Sid) fixed the problem for me. I'm using the mixed testing/unstable setup explained here . This setup allows you to upgrade some user-selected packages to the Sid versions, while the rest of the system stays in "testi...

Re: What does your desktop look like?

Now I'm using fluxbox with conky. The music player is moc. In conky, the two green graphs show CPUs, red shows the incoming net traffic and orange the outgoing. The blue colour shows the number of new mails, grey the date and yellow the time. The fluxbox slit has wmweather, wmmemload and mixer.app, ...

Re: Disable Xorg blanking

I currently use icewm. Maybe I'll just create an xorg.conf file, so I can get rid of the ugly xset cronjobs (no involuntary screenblanking after I've set these cronjobs, though, so it seems to work).

Re: ~/.xsession is called twice

If you use a desktop like GNOME, you could try a desktop specific way to autostart your program instead of using the ~/.xsession file. I don't use GNOME, but a Google search for "gnome autostart" found this HOWTO: http://www.ghacks.net/2009/04/08/add-an-application-to-gnomes-autostart/ Oth...

Re: Disable Xorg blanking

I don't think it's about DPMS. When I write "xset q" in a terminal window, the output says "DPMS is Disabled", just like I want it to be. The problem is that the "Screen Saver" section in the "xset q" output says "timeout: 600". After I type in a ter...

Disable Xorg blanking

The X server in Debian seems to have a "funny" habit to suddenly start blanking the screen if I don't touch the mouse or the keyboard for a while, although I've used the xset command (xset -dpms s off) in my ~/.xinitrc to tell Xorg specifically NOT to blank the screen. I know how to disabl...

Re: How to enable write-back caching on USB flash drive?

Debian Sarge no longer receives security updates. You should upgrade your Debian installation to Lenny, which is the latest stable Debian release. In case you're using ext3 filesystem, enabling writeback caching should be a pretty trivial task. For more information, see the following documentation: ...

Re: Hard disk monitoring tools

I'm pretty sure the support for Sarge has expired a long time ago. You should upgrade your server to Etch at least, preferably to Lenny. This way you can get security support that is not available for Sarge any more. I think the application you're looking for is called smartmontools. http://packages...

Re: Theme wishlist thread

IMHO, prosilver sucks big time. subsilver2 is OK. Other themes that I might try, were they available, are:

eTech
Getaway
Hestia
proFormell
proglass
prosilver Special Edition
SkyBlue
subAndreas08

Bugs are (usually) not a major issue in running Debian testing. Most of the serious bugs will be fixed before the packages reach testing. Broken dependencies are a more common issue for Debian testing users, but this can be pretty much avoided by setting up a mixed testing/unstable system with testi...

Squeeze is out, I upgraded to it. OK, then we can start complaining why Squeeze+1 hasn't appeared yet. :D BTW, I noticed that DistroWatch says on their main page "For new installations, the live CD method of installing the distribution is probably the easiest". So I downloaded the GNOME v...

I use mostly liberation fonts in GUI apps and terminus fonts in terminals. You can try to change the basic global font rendering settings on your system by running in terminal (as root) the command "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config" and then start a GUI application, like iceweasel, to se...

hello, i guess its a simple question: i tried a few times to (apt-get) install moc ( music on commandline) and i got moc (meta object compiler). What to do in such a case ? Normally, you shouldn't get two packages with the same name in Debian's official repositories. Try a graphical APT frontend, l...
