I expected some email traffic about a "known outage", but there was none:

Re: sending files via ftp from console and screenshoo
I guess if he's using screen and wants to transfer a "screenshot" with ftp, he's working on a remote machine without X.

Re: sending files via ftp from console and screenshoo
I would rather try to get logs of the program, or redirect the output to generate logs yourself.

Re: Where is the Samba shares (.gvfs is empty)
Maybe it appears in /etc/mtab? You didn't understand. Mtab is a file. I meant a folder for surfing local network. Nope, I actually understood ;) As mtab contains all mounted file systems, I thought you could have a look at it to find the path. I'm not sure, whether the gvfs-tools "mount" ...

Is there a "details" option?
Just a guess: no ntfs driver installed, install ntfs-3g.

Re: zshell: how to clear history?
If it works like bash, then you have to exit zsh (quit the process, login with sh or work with scp) and *then* empty the file, because bash (~? zsh) reads the histfile on startup and writes it back on exit, so your change is ignored.

Re: en-GB (UK) keyboard apostrophe is wrong.
Ah! Got it. You have to add the option "nodeadkeys" to your keyboard layout. That changes the behaviour of all the accent keys and so on (no good idea for french people, as it takes away the possibility to write 'á'ccents).

Re: A good laptop for Debian & Windows XP
This could become a long thread with every company producing laptops mentioned...for a general advice: look for business series. I have a hp compaq 6510b (14" with 1280x800 res, 2kg weight, 2-4h on battery) and would never buy a consumer device. Maybe someone can confirm my impression of consum...

Re: The process restarter
Not sure if there's a program that can do that, but a little script could do the trick: #!/bin/bash while [ -e run.callofduty ]; do nohup ping debian.net; done; What it does: You have to create a file "run.callofduty", then run the script (replace ping debian.net with your server command l...

Re: Boot extremly slow , so as run a terminal or filebrowser
Just a guess: are there configured network resources (in cups/rsyslogd)? So they would try to resolve some name via DNS, or connect to some IP, resulting in a timeout again and again. I have some printers in cups in completely different networks, it's ok there.
