Re: Debian Forum for children
One thing that can be said for their effort, they've figured out a decent way to organize their howto section. One of the members created an index post which is stickied at the top of the section. In it they list, with links, most or all of the howto's, divided by topic area. The other experiment th...

Re: To All Dear Mods, Admins, etc
Mez, First off, thanks for keeping the lights on. It would be best to make very clear what the admins/mods want the members to do. Saulgoode's observation that only one member ever reported nomko's behavior before people started piling on illustrates the need for this. Unless I misread things, part ...

Re: Can't reach security.debian.org repository...
I sometimes have problems with the security repo as well. When I have trouble I just use a mirror.... Thank you, Dean... I'd thought of trying something like that, but I haven't found any place obvious where that particular repo is mirrored. Where do I find that info? Or are security updates applie...

Re: Can't reach security.debian.org repository...
Well, now I've also added a kernel option to my grub menu.lst to disable ipv6, so it's DEFINITELY disabled. lsmod | grep ipv6 returns nothing. Am I just missing the post where everybody solved this problem for real? Just how many security updates have I missed? Mike D. Hi folks, Every time I try to ...

Can't reach security.debian.org repository...
Hi folks, Every time I try to update the package list from the repositories in either Update Manager or Synaptic, it fails to connect to security.debian.org ... This has been going on for quite a while. I've done Julian's trick to disable ipv6 system-wide, plus I installed the dnscache-run package a...

And how long will it be before they're pretending to use this hack to get into secure devices on TV shows like 24, and the various CSI's.

where or how did you discover that tool? I was working on fixing my display resolution issues with the newer xorg and needed to know what my monitor could do. It's so old there is no information online about it and I don't have a manual. I knew newer monitors had some way to identify themselves to ...

Re: Common Courtesy Previously: Use of Sarcasm in this section.
If I had noticed that the thread was in the beginner section and/or considered that fact then I probably wouldn't have posted in the same way, perhaps at all. It would be really nice if threads in the Beginners' Section could be flagged in New and Unanswered Posts, and Active Topics listings by the...

Re: Common Courtesy Previously: Use of Sarcasm in this section.
I've been around the forums less the last several weeks, but I've managed to visit every other day or so and scan new posts. I make an extra effort to check in on Beginners' Section threads to see if the posters are getting the help they need and if there's something I can add. I can make a few obse...

I've an old CRT NEC Multisync 90. Been looking online for its specs but it's hard to find. Video card is an NVIDIA Geforce 4 MX integrated video card. And, I'll try the other stuff as soon as I get home from work thanks. You may be able to get the monitor to tell you its specs itself. Install the p...

Re: wget to download a complete web-page
Can I use wget to download a web-page complete with the graphics? If yes, what is the CLI command? I need it to write a script to automate downloading a few sites as I do it everyday. In my limited experience, it depends on the complexity of the web site, and the command can be tweaked all over fro...

Sound card output question?
I'm putting this in Off Topic since it isn't Debian related, though it is a hardware question... Is the output of a sound card DC coupled or AC coupled? More simply, can I use a sound card's D/A converter directly to produce a controllable DC voltage? Otherwise, I suppose there is D/A converter hard...

Keeping /home with new install...
My CPU is 64-bit AMD. 32-bit Lenny runs from an IDE drive that's getting cramped. I bought a SATA HD that's not cramped. I have a master GRUB on a small primary partition. The second primary is devoted to logical partitions for a couple of installs of Lenny, with /, swap, and /home for each. I want ...
