Re: Bonkers Gnome

Perhaps some historical context would be useful. This gem from nearly a decade ago puts all the pieces together quite nicely:

Re: I need a system call to change the desktop background

Also on Xfce, you can right click on any image and set it as the desktop wallpaper. Can't be easier than that. I'm surprised that Mate doesn't have a function like that.

Re: I need a system call to change the desktop background

Xfce has a desktop function (just right click on the desktop) to change the wallpaper every X minutes. Caveat . . . I'm still on jessie and not going to boot up an iso to see if it's still there in later releases because dinner is ready. Also I have never used it.

Re: Leaving systemd...

. . . Has anyone heard from him? Edit: Somehow, I missed this thread from 2018: https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=137576 :cry: The PM I mentioned in that thread remains in my outbox 3 years and some months after it was sent to him. His absence is a great loss to this community . . .

Indeed! It is included in this list of GNU/Linux distributions as well as other Free Unices using alternate init options.

Re: New Update Is Counter-Productive

it [the like button] gathers data about your habits and goes into your "social" profile I don't think it's tied to Facebook, at least not for now. I said nothing about Facebook. I was referring to individual users' actions which could expose their social groupings/affinities on this forum...

Re: New Update Is Counter-Productive

Weird, because peeking over at your forums where you are shown as the administrator you have tons of edits in your comments to users, so taking that into account I feel you are being disingenuous. You know what the feature does and why it is there....in fact you've explained it to your own users a ...

Re: New Update Is Counter-Productive

I do no social networking. I don't own a cell phone. So I'm probably more sensitive than most to the appearance of this intrusive "feature". Why? Because as Eben Moglen noted in his presentation at re:publica in 2012, it teaches the machine (and their uberlords) about YOU! IOW . . . it is ...

[*] Was it ever considered to switch from the generally good phpBB to some "next-gen" platform? Say Discourse or Forem (what is powering dev.to). Oh hell no. Many times no. I can handle the likes of discourse, with its dynamic-loading pointless-animation-slinging avatar-filled insanity, f...

Re: Forum and server updates - Moving, fixes, and new admins.

I like the default theme along with prosilver both are easy for me and my failing eyes to read, but have no Idea how to apply the css fix for 100% width. Could I request both these be available as flatstyle-100 and prosilver-100 this would fix the dead space poor efficiency issue and the vision iss...

I have icons! I had a * in my custom font configuration that was fubaring them. I am quite happy with the look now that the forum is surrounded by #333333. Here's a screenie!! I just checked and that image should be there for 14 days. Then poof . . .. https://transfer.sh/1eNzgDJ/icons.png Would be n...

A minor css tweak eliminated that whiteness for me:

Code: Select all

  width: 100%  !important ;
  background-color: #333333 !important;

Re: New debian.org website (if you can call it that)

Well, it's new to me because I haven't been to the Debian website in a very long time. I spend my Debian time here on the forum. I read a comment earlier today about the not-so-new site from someone who obviously assumed the same as I did. You can just delete this post then as it is not timely.

Thread was about changes to the Debian website that apparently happened some time ago though it was news to me. So really nothing to report or discuss.

Re: Forum and server updates - Moving, fixes, and new admins.

The advanced search cog is visible on my end. Can you screen cap again? Please reread my post. The icon is visible. It just jumps to the left by maybe 10 px when hovered. You can see from this screenie - https://transfer.sh/1Df7YX4/jumping-icon.png - that in addition to the "Go to advanced sea...
