Re: Boot time/memory comparison: sysvinit vs systemd
The main difference for me is that I find it much easier to control and (in particular) query & troubleshoot running services and daemons under systemd. Of course this may be because I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to SysVinit... Also, I have to say that I prefer the BSD/Slackware-sty...

Re: operating systems without systemd
Regarding the musl-based distros: * the next major version of Dragora is going to be musl/openrc based. * alpine linux feels a bit like debian, at first; it's musl/busybox/openrc, with uselessd in testing/. Instead of apt, it uses apk--a custom package manager, providing dependencies but not suggest...

Re: operating systems without systemd
There's a pre-alpha iso of devuan that's been mentioned on the list. At this point it's ~Debian with sysvinit preinstalled (still partly infected, but Xfce as default DE), but they've rebuilt util-linux without systemd: http://packages.devuan.org/devuan/pool/main/u/util-linux/ I've pointed my source...

Re: ATI drivers install
ok cool, so now I think I've got everything back in place, but how do I check that everything's setup properly for the opensource drivers? Does a running desktop environment imply proper operation or are there some specific commands that I can use to make sure everything's good? Assuming you have x...

Re: ATI drivers install
I had roughly the same issue with my laptop. Following the guides but always ending up with a black screen. SID worked, but stable did not. I didn't investigate that much though, I just moved back to stable and radeon. I have my fingers crossed that the latest kernel patches will solve my heat issu...

Re: Put a CLI Boot Option on Your Grub2 Menu
Correct me if I am wrong but booting into CLI instead of GDM (or whatever) is not the same thing as "Single-user mode". Single user mode is only loading a part but not all of the system. See http://wiki.debian.org/RunLevel or better http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch03....

Re: no vesafb in standard squeeze kernel ?
It's using i915; that "should" provide framebuffer via Kernel Mode Setting (KMS). But kms may not always be enabled by default, partly because it was buggy on intel 8xx graphics in older kernel versions. Use modeset=1 if you want to try forcing it, though you'd better also load fbcon: modp...

Re: undervolting and kernel - not possible with newer kernel
Hello! I am using debian for it's ease of use, it's light weight and ability to be configured relatively easily. I have an older laptop that I have begun to use again and have been through all the motions long ago to get undervolting using PHC in this machine working. One of the pitfalls of this la...

Re: ARP spoofing with backtrack
Several points: 1) You are posting in the Debian forums, not those for Backtrack. Backtrack forums will be much more suitable to geting an answer. 2) Forums are not real-time: if you want an answer quick, use IRC. 3) HOWTO is for writing guides, not for asking for help. This is true on most distros'...

Re: .udev/ already exists on the static /dev!
In my experience boot time impact from noinitrd is less than variation in network connection speed. I would expect you could purge userdevfs, if you have it installed--neither of my Debian installs (Squeeze and Sid/experimental) have it. Udev is really only essential while you are starting something...

Re: Request for patched udev 145 (for older kernel)
That looks like a patched libc6 being needed for udev to work; but it seems Debian already has that patch.
See http://snapshot.debian.org/package/udev/ for all the different versions of udev that Debian has used.

Re: How often you reinstall your DEbian.
Reinstall Debian? Not yet. I've run into some problems, but...that's what chroot is for. Just a couple weeks ago I migrated an old *buntu Precise partition to sid. rm -rf lib var bin sbin usr; debootstrap sid /mnt/sda5; vim /mnt/sda5/etc/fstab chroot in, set a passwd, add a few packages, you're set....

Re: VIM cheat sheet
To me the vim help usually sounds like Chinese or Marsian. I read something like this: ]] [count] sections forward or to the next '{' in the first column. When used after an operator, then also stops below a '}' in the first column. exclusive Note that exclusive-linewise often applies. read it thre...

Re: Linux on Symbol / Motorola MC75A6
xscale: That's an old armv5 system; use an "armel" distro. You do NOT want anything "PPC", since that is a completely incompatible architecture. You also do not want "armhf", or Ubuntu; those require newer processors (armv7 or sometimes armv6). As I use x86-linux, I can...

Re: A word of "I HATE YOU"
By the way, you may want to install firmware-linux-nonfree and/or blacklist radeonfb if you have problems with the radeon driver. (On some cards radeonfb is unuseable but gets loaded when radeon firmware are missing.) For getting a shell, I find that init=/bin/sh (or your preferred shell) is the sur...

Re: compiling coreutils
I'm not sure where to start explaining or exactly what you're asking/wanting to understand. I guess, that you want to understand the build process for coreutils/GNU-style packages? If so, I'll try to summarize... 1. make automates package builds in a dependency-based way. Unfortunately, most develop...

From what I'm seeing, it sounds like the plan is: -Wheezy gets released. -libmotif gets upgraded to 2.3.4 in experimental (in progress) -for Jessie, Motif moves to main. -Lesstif-linked packages get rebuilt for Motif. -*-lesstif gets renamed. -Lesstif gets removed. -libXp gets removed. -Jessie gets ...

v is select by characters (visual mode), but V is select by lines. "Select all" = ggVG When you do :!, % expands to the current file. So you can go: :!wc % :<range>! <command> replaces <range> with the output of <command> So to get the output of ls -l, without current file: o :.!ls -l | gr...
