Re: Debian 9 - NetworkManager show wifi list but not working
... This is probably outside my expertise, n_hologram I don't think it is, trust your tests. I'm an old guy and I won't be here much longer, it is to everyone's benefit that you become adept because you put in the effort to help. I'll make some suggestions: I think the OP's description of the issue...

Re: Debian 9 - NetworkManager show wifi list but not working
Another minor point, this thread should probably be in Installation rather than General Discussion.

Re: Debian 9 - NetworkManager show wifi list but not working
Those are called "Predictable Interface Names", the new and modern way systemd enumerates interfaces.n_hologram wrote: It included some bizarre names for common interfaces.
I like Bulkley's suggestion to look at the Wiki, How to use, and/or using the install that includes firmware.

Re: Screensaver? Solved, THX!
I did not suggest either that you were a "bother" or that you asked too many questions. I was responding to what appeared to me as your struggle. The derivative that I suggested is essentially Debian made easier because it would work for you from the moment of install or as a live system a...

Re: Screensaver?
In that case, you could consider a Debian derivative distro that would come as an "out of the box" solution, can be run as live from from a DVD so you can see it before installing and it has lots of good configuration utilities that are graphical user interface so you won't have to do much...

Re: Is Secutity really something to worry about with Linux?
It is better to choose a root password at install, and then add yourself to the sudoer's file later. Yes, with the proviso that is suggested in your edit. Give sudo user limited access to things like dmesg but not to things like install. Security and convenience do not go hand-in-hand, they fight e...

Re: Is Secutity really something to worry about with Linux?
One of the important keys in the installation is that a root password is not assigned. when you do this: you can't log in as root. neither can anyone else. instead the first user account is added to the sudo users and will acquire the authority to issue sudo Mike, have you considered the case where...

Re: Dependency resolution, apt-get dist-upgrade with backpor
I'm sorry but I had to go after posting my last comment but now it is what serves as morning for me, so I have time for a bit more. It's good that you have a sane method of testing things and a fallback strategy. When you install a package from the backports repository as you have done, it will be u...

Does it work any better if you try to fetch:

@stevepusser You may want to review this discussion: https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2013/01/msg00521.html Re: Backports upgrade policy (ButAutomaticUpdates:yes) I do agree that one should only install one or a few necessary backports. [OT] Not likely of interest to most readers. And it is long. I have been waiting until debcub was satisfied he had the answers he wanted. Since it appears that debcub isn't going to return to this thread I want to write something more. By the way, in general, I think it is confusing for an inexperie...

Re: Getting regular system freezes
My system specs say 'Intel Pentium CPU N5320' I'm sorry, I looked up the specs on the manufactures web site. I do know that sometimes components are changed without updating documentation and I should have mentioned the possibility. If it had been a 3520 it would be a Bay Trail. What did you get fr...

The system specs indicate that it would have an Intel Bay Trail processor.nickmdowson wrote:I get regular system freezes,... The laptop is a Clevo W950TU.
Try a search with, Intel Bay Trail and intel_idle.max_cstate, keywords. You should find quite a bit of information that might be helpful, at least worth checking.

Re: Debian 9 GRUB boot order
Thank you all. Yes, Dai_trying, Mint was installed after Debian. Sunrat, I have tried what you suggest. Trouble is, I don't always want the last used to start again. I'd like Debian to boot whenever I make no explicit selection. That's what debiman's suggestion would give you. sunrat was just respo...

I don't want to beat anyone up.
But I can verify that it's not default for Ubu 16.04 LTS and I doubt the 18.04 LTS is out yet as it is only Feb., at least here where I am.
I agree with both Dai_trying and sunrat
