Re: Unable to write to thumb drive

I've seen that happen with failed USB drives. They do fail. I futzed with one for a very long time before tossing it in the round file. I suspected that it was bad all along, but I kept working at it just for the education. At the price for them now, it's not really worth expending much effort. Have...

Re: Install Debian on Chromebook

The only important part of that page is at the very bottom, where it says to follow the updated instructions here: https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton/blob/HEAD/README.md That's about all I can tell you. Assuming you did put your chromebook into developer mode, read it all again. Some may not be re...

Re: NAS NFS mount for particular host

The client is the computer which is trying to mount the NAS, just to be clear. If I understand correctly, other computers on the network can mount the NAS machine using the hostname, but you have one computer which will not? That seems strange to me. I would suspect it has something to do with the n...

Re: Shortcut for installing Buster over an Ubuntu installati

Your system is entirely Ubuntu packages. The only possible shortcut that I'm aware of is installing Debian from an installation disk, and formatting the HDD in the process. Be aware that Ubuntu is based on Debian Sid (Unstable), so the software in Debian Buster (Stable) is far behind what you're usi...

Re: Stop making XFCE single CD images

Yes, the netinstall image is less than half a gigabyte. But it requires an internet connection to do the installation. Without an internet connection it's useless. I was under the impression that we were discussing OS images that can make a standalone installation.

Re: Stop making XFCE single CD images

It's not my preference, it's just the way it is. I don't know of anything I can do about it. Software, like gas, expands to fill its container. The genie cannot be put back into the bottle. No modern OS going forward is going to fit on a CD, that's a fact and it won't change. To use a CD to boot, on...

Re: Any Printer Working 100% Out of the Box?

I've never bothered with page alignment nor color profiles. Install CUPS and get on with life. You will probably have to change the page size, since most printers come with letter-size as default, but that's a feature built into any printer on any OS.

Re: Stop making XFCE single CD images

Well, one has to use what is available, of course. But technology keeps advancing, and that cannot be stopped. The rest of the world will not continue to use obsolete media or hardware just to cater to the small percentage of people who only have decades-old equipment. 5.25" floppies are no lon...

Re: Stop making XFCE single CD images

USB was released in 1996. Almost every computer built in the past 20 years has USB.

Re: NAS NFS mount for particular host

Sorry, I had a brain glitch. The correct file is /etc/exports, not hosts. If you use something like 192.168.1.0/24 you will allow everybody on the network to connect. If you just specify individual IP addresses, like 192.168.1.100, only those will be allowed to connect. Something like this: /volume1...

Re: Kernel version why not same as Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is based on Debian Unstable. Sid and Ubuntu have the same kernel most of the time. Debian Stable is a great distro for a production server, not so great as a desktop OS. The over-riding parameter for Stable is stability - it always works, as long as newer software isn't mixed into it. That me...

Re: NAS NFS mount for particular host

You allow or deny clients in /etc/hosts on the server. You can specify specific clients, or you can allow any clients on the network.

Re: Migration

The LVM volumes are formatted as LVM, with the actual filesystem inside that. When you removed the volume group, you lost everything. The best option now, IMO, is to reformat and reinstall the OS, without LVM.

Re: Stop making XFCE single CD images

With the ubiquity of USB flash drives, I would think they are at least as available as CDs in most areas of the world, and are far more versatile and useful. They can be rewritten with a newer OS as needed, or used for other storage when not needed as installation media. Am I missing something here?

Re: Install Debian on Chromebook

To which partition is the install going? You didn't say which partition is which. Ext4 is a Linux filesystem type, one of several.

Re: Migration

Removing the LVM setup you have involves reformatting the partitions and reinstalling the OS. It's certainly possible. When you do the reinstallation, do not choose to use LVM, and it won't be used.

Re: Install Debian on Chromebook

The crouton script can be deleted and downloaded at will, and should be updated as necessary. It's not part of the Linux system, just a script for running the chroot. I find the error message about not being an ext filesystem puzzling. It has been a few years since I used crouton, but the /usr/bin l...
