Re: No sound output on laptop speakers and wired devices
My laptop had 2 sound cards - a traditional chip and the SoC. I used the info in the Arch wiki to set one as the default. If you have pulseaudio, the cards are referred to as sinks and you can set the default sink (card) through that interface. See section 3.2 in the Arch wiki. https://wiki.archlinu...

Re: I need a system call to change the desktop background
This is usually configured by the login Display manager.
https://wiki.debian.org/DisplayManager
I'm not sure which DM is installed with Mate (gdm vs lightdm), but web searches for whatever you have should show how to configure slideshow type backgrounds or random backgrounds.

Re: For a glorious moment, enjoy the current Chromium on Buster
I'm reviving this thread after a Buster -> Bullseye upgrade. I was unable to find any unportable ungoogled-chromium packages for Debian 11. I found that the current version (90) Buster package has multiple CVE;s https://wiki.debian.org/ungoogled-chromium Although It looks like flathub is a possiblit...

I suspect this is related to the BIOS settings and if secure boot is enabled.

Re: Samsung ML-1610 ML1610 printer specific options
IMHO, the most complete configuration GUI is the CUPs web interface. http(s)://locallhost:631 In the interface, you should see a top toolbar with "CUPS.org Home Administration Classes Help Jobs Printers". Clicking "Printers" should show the ML-1610 and selecting said printer shou...

Re: Is there a printer suported list there?
A little background. When you click print, the vast majority of applications generate a postscript file (*.ps). If the printer is Postscript capable, the printer will be able to print the file. Postscript was originally propitiatory and printer manufactures had to pay a license fee to Adobe. https:/...

Re: Openbox doesn' t start
I use OpenBox with the xcompmgr compositor started from xdm without issue in Debian 10. sddm accommodates X11 and or Wayland while OpenBox is strictly X11. sddm also leans toward Qt while OpenBox is strictly gtk. I wonder if you are having compositor issues with sddm starting Wayland? OpenBox will n...

If you have a series of scripts, I find YAD to be very helpful in organizing the scripts: https://packages.debian.org/buster/yad Example that organizes abook folders: http://daemonforums.org/showpost.php?p=67680&postcount=4 Here is another one that organizes Weather products from my local Airpor...

Re: remote connect to debian 10 advice
I'm not familiar with Remmina but I'm guessing it is a GUI to setup a remote X-windows. Depending on your needs, it may be overkill. I use openssh/sftp as a simple way to access/file transfer between devices on my home network. Web search also come up with detailed instructions on running remote X-w...

Re: [SOLVED] problem with printing
For future reference, firmware will not be uploaded to the printer until the device is ID'd.Most usb devices are ID'd on boot, printer powerup or hotplugged.

Re: problem with printing
This printer uses the ZjStream protocol and will work with either HPLIP or foo2zjs. Given that it is not a Printer/Scanner/Fax, I would lean toward foo2zjs. http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ The lightest installation would be CUPS + foo2zjs. HPLIP pulls alot of older python dependencies. The Debian package ...

Re: Printer: driverless: Change a not supported setting ?
Both the ppd's you posted have the same syntax for setting Draft/FastDraft. I wonder if your applications lack permissions to change printer defaults? A way to test is adjust printer defaults in the CUPS web interface. The web interface is accessed in browser URL http://localhost:631, To access the ...

Re: Printer: driverless: Change a not supported setting ?
Some manufacturers refer to low density as ink-saving mode. I would recommend you scan the entire *.ppd. It will give you a sense of what is available and the syntax that implements a particular feature. Although I saw your desire to use driver-less printing, are you sure it offers the same flexibil...

Re: Printer: driverless: Change a not supported setting ?
Draft mode is usually a lower resolution; ie 600x600 -> 300x300dpi. Does not save much ink but the size of the job decreases to 1/4. Other things to shrink the job is to go color to greyscale. Does your ppd have any resolution settings?

Re: Printer: driverless: Change a not supported setting ?
This is not a direct answer to directly adjusting print density but simple work-around and that would be to adjust the density in either gimp or libreoffice (font color black -> dark grey). I do not know much about driverless printing but if there is a *ppd involved, looking at the content of a ppd ...

The Debian Network Configuration wiki uses different syntax:

It also uses /etc/resolv.conf for nameserver setup

Re: Brother MFC-7420 printer prints a ton of blanks
Debian has a native driver for the MFC-7240
https://wiki.debian.org/Brother
This does not need 32 bit libs so I would uninstall multiarch and the 3rd party driver from Brother.
