Giving my laptop etc a different identity for one purpose?
There is a particular niche online community I've perodically enjoyed for fifteen years which I left a few times and eventually seem to have been banned from. It might even be a banal case of looking like I was a bot or something, when I last tried to enrol, or maybe a dormant account exists with th...

Re: possible permissions issue with netinstall + Fluxbox set
At present I'm having to take a step back from this as I'm not sure I can afford an optional stress 'in these times'. But what I've done is to put slightly different setups on the three computers, for the moment. The newest laptop has Debian Fluxbox/netinstall and LightDM. The mini desktop has the s...

Re: possible permissions issue with netinstall + Fluxbox set
This is promising, and once a grim three day migraine has passed I'll focus on doing the reading; but, audacity doesn't need to be run as root and is still showing the gripe I illustrated above. Is this still something that can be solved with polkit? Permissions seem odd in randomly system-wide fash...

possible permissions issue with netinstall + Fluxbox setup
Sorry that I could not make this more brief. I'm thinking that these issues are related, and I'm hoping it's just my naivety that's making the issue drag on a bit and not a corrupted install. Mostly my system is working very well and I much prefer the speed and simplicity. I recently made the break ...

Re: 'iconbar mode' in Fluxbox
Apologies, I think. I had thought the iconbar mode menu had distinct sections regarding the toolbar and workspaces but I can see that the default was 'workspaces' which having now reselected that has restored sanity, to the desktop and me... The toolbar is behaving. I don't know if this thread shoul...

'iconbar mode' in Fluxbox [Solved]
The toolbar in Fluxbox seems either still buggy or eccentric in how it works to the point of being hard work. I've tried using the 'icons and 'noicons' setting chosen from the toolbar menu but it seems either the program disappears from the desktop or from the toolbar, and can then only be found by ...

Re: netinstall and no-ethernet laptop [Solved]
The adaptor route worked out well - after installing and rebooting it was recognised enabling me to install Fluxbox and get my bearings from there. I probably wouldn't have felt like proceeding if I hadn't already identified the interface name from the live Cinnamon/Debian usb drive, bunt unlike wit...

I should have guessed - it's the classic 'enx00e04c534458' interface.

Re: netinstall and no-ethernet laptop
I have LXDE, yes. For the moment - I put 10.6 on with LXDE so I could use the laptop while waiting for the adapter. When I know everything is feasible I'll wipe this. It has arrived today and I'm sitting here in front of three computers, all with Debian. Somebody else's Cinnamon-equipped laptop, lap...

Re: netinstall and no-ethernet laptop
Having just read the topic referring to new improved 'su -'... When I first started to use Debian after being a Mint and Ubuntu person I switched to su happily enough (and can't remember in those days during install being given the option of both or either). Since Debian 9 and 10 i've gone back to s...

Great, many thanks for that - if the easy route with the adaptor doesn't work I'll have another attempt.

Re: netinstall and no-ethernet laptop
Thanks, yes, I can see that's an idea. I have really overdone the distro-hopping and reinstalling over the years myself though, and though the worst of that habit's in the past I think I'll have a couple of stabs at this when the adaptor arrives. I set up a Thinkpad this way a week ago and though I ...

Re: netinstall and no-ethernet laptop
As far as I can see, despite three hundred mb of system utilities none of the commands that could get my wlo1 interface up are installed with the netinstall. None of the commands are recognised. None of the scripts I found would work. Puzzling.

Re: netinstall and no-ethernet laptop
Great, I was looking at those a couple of days ago but read reports of them not working, that they can't work. You've confirmed otherwise so I think I'll pay for one right now and unless I hear other good news this evening I'll install something else temporarily and use this adaptor when it comes. (...

netinstall and no-ethernet laptop [Solved]
This is no emergency, but I am quite keen to try and achieve this and learn from it also without too much stress. I made a start today on trying to set up a second laptop with Debian beginning from the netinstall iso, the one with the non-free firmware. I thought/ knew from the outset that without a...

Re: Fluxbox + Wicd + disappearing applet
I understand now that what runs in the tray and what has been started so far on my setup are separate, therefore that as I now have it 'wicd-client --tray &' added to Fluxbox's startup file has resolved this without need to pursue the .xsession route.

Re: Fluxbox + Wicd + disappearing applet
Thanks. If I create an .xsessionrc file or place 'wicd-client --tray &' in the Fluxbox startup file, can you confirm that this won't entail wicd effectively being started twice, that this command pertains to only the applet? I use the Slim login manager, if it's relevant. I see that some are 'ha...

Fluxbox + Wicd + disappearing applet [solved]
Hello. I've just used the netinstall iso of Debian 10 to make a Fluxbox-fronted system with minimal and light applications. I've used Wicd instead of Network Manager, and though it is working very well I would like its taskbar applet to appear consistently on the taskbar - it does if wicd-gtk is sta...

Re: HP Deskjet 1510 series printer - seen but not working
Thanks. After looking at your link I was able to compare the printer's url with it in Xubuntu, saw that it seemed wrong, some odd characters in there somehow. Removing the printer and adding it again has corrected things for whatever reason. Black working, probably just need new colour cartridge. Go...

HP Deskjet 1510 series printer - seen/not working [Solved]
I haven't needed much assistance with Debian for quite some time but don't think I've dealt with printers before, though a fairly recent version of Ubuntu or Xubuntu had worked with this model, a Deskjet 1510. I'm using Debian 10 Cinnamon Edition and the printer application does list the printer. Wh...
