Re: When Debian 11.4 ? Release schedule?

Canci: good question. The reason is that debian security repository is really slow for me, (I'm from Ukraine, and it takes about 15 min to install security updates per server, speeds are very slow ) and I need to install a lot of new servers (30 or more). I do disable security repo, but enable Debia...

Re: DHCP: What is the diff between "client" and "your" IP?

Both answers not very helpful. And first search gives me exactly zero useful results. (Google is not _that_ good) Anyway, "client IP" allows to query extra parameters about "your IP" from a different interface with a different IP, which I think is redundant. (since client can spo...

DHCP: What is the diff between "client" and "your" IP?

Hi, Looking at DHCP RFC2131 - What is the diff between "client" and "your" IP? ciaddr 4 Client IP address; only filled in if client is in BOUND, RENEW or REBINDING state and can respond to ARP requests. yiaddr 4 'your' (client) IP address. I read it, but still don't understand. I...

Re: Introducing : Brand-new Internet Protocol "Five Fields"

50-bits can be put into 64-bit integer, so there is only 1 extra CPU operation - the bitmask (bit extract). It is way faster than trying to process 128-bits on 64-bit CPU (IPv6) or doing checksums + fragmentation on every hop (IPv4). Considering the other optimizations (such as no ARP), in reality I...

Re: Do you think PCs will become obsolete in near future ?

I think not.

All the people I know, that are buying smartphones and tablets, are buying them *in addition* to their current PC (desktop or laptop). No one is buying a tablet to replace a PC.

Introducing : Brand-new Internet Protocol "Five Fields"

Hi all, I have created a new Internet Protocol "Five Fields". Why ? Because IPv6 is hard to use, and I wanted to keep look & feel similar to IPv4. Problem with IPv6, is that those addresses are very hard for humans to remember, compare and visualize topologies in human brain. IPv4 has ...

Hi,

I got an Ultrabook, Toshiba Z30, but it's touchpad is recognized as PS/2 mouse, which disallows me to use it for scrolling.

Any ideas on how-to install touchpad drivers and how-to figure out which kind of touchpad I have ?

Re: How-to boot Debian into text-mode (80x25) ?

Okay, it seems few things combined helped: 1. GRUB: (in /etc/grub.d/10_linux...) gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode needs to be removed. 2. GRUB kernel: (in /etc/default/grub) nomodeset 3. GRUB itself: (in /etc/default/grub) GRUB_TERMINAL=console GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 Only those modes together helps ! For me th...

[SOLVED] How-to boot Debian into text-mode (80x25) ?

Problem: I can't see anything at the hi-res of modern monitors, as my eyes degrade. I need to console lower res to good-old DOS-style, 80x25. I installed brand-new Debian 8 (netinst), no X11, no display manager for now. (Intel 4400 graphics chip) I tried: edit in file /etc/default/grub: GRUB_TERMINA...

Debian 7.0 needs MTP support in order to be relevant

Debian needs to backport this killer feature into it's KDE, else Android 4.x devices (such as samrtphones and tablets) will not work with Debian.

Re: Debian's Community Distribution Patent Policy FAQ

Debian 6.0 ships with patented codecs, including MP3 and MPEG4 in the main repository, to which you can access by KDE Kaffeince and other programs. (which both openSUSE and Fedora refuse to ship) What is the stance about such issues ? (esp. considering that Google Chrome recently dropped support for...
