Re: [Package Management] Linux Counterpart to "M$ Store vs Program Files"
........1. You can do things like backport on Debian, but they're not recommended for a reason; That's not true. Limited use of backports is okay. What's not recommended is installing lots of backports, like adding the backports repo and then trying to install all of the backported packages. I like...

Thanks for the reply, this is also a possible solution. Who would risk using an account like that? :) Lots of people. I got a similar warning when I tried to access my Gmail using via POP3 using Claws Mail. I am not sure why using POP3 over an encrypted connection is considered unsafe, but maybe th...

Re: Germany to ban Telegram?
And maybe once more for completeness: the issue seems to be that if the authorities need data concerning a certain message (e.g. a death threat or such that needs to be investigated by the police) Telegram apparently does not respond/cooperate, which is however a requirement for any such company to...

Always make at least one backup before reinstalling or performing a major upgrade. If something goes wrong, you'll be glad that you did.

Re: Failing to install on a BeagleBone Black (armhf)
That's unfortunate. I suggested using grml-debootstrap because, if it had worked, it would have been the simplest and easiest way to do this. Fortunately, you can use plain debootstrap instead. However, it is more work and will require you to carefully study some documentation. Suggested reading: ht...

Re: Dual boot - LOST GRUB
Boot with Super GRUB2 Disk and use it to boot your Debian system. Once you are back in Debian again, reinstall GRUB. There are other ways to repair GRUB, but this way is one of the easiest.

Re: Failing to install on a BeagleBone Black (armhf)
I have an idea that might work: 1. Create an extra partition and install the OEM version of Debian on that. 2. Boot into that system and (if necessary), format the first partition that you would normally install Debian on. 3. Mount that partition (if necessary). 4. Use grml-debootstrap to install pu...

Re: Layered Sandbox Filesystem
I just want to be able to install .deb packages that think they are installed like normal but do not have any impact on my real system. This would allow me to install notepadqq or chromium 93 from the Debian testing without actually installing any dependencies from that repo. What you want to do is...

Re: USB with persistence [NOT SOLVED]
I followed the instructions in the link below to the best of my ability, and the live environment boots up fine, but the system does not remember settings or keep user files beyond a reboot. https://wiki.debian.org/DebianLive/LiveUsbPersistence That procedure is flawed, and also seems incomplete. I...

I tried 'W95 FAT32', and the USB only booted on my one computer. Which is the correct type that I should choose? Unless you're working with certain old operating systems, use this one: 0c W95 FAT32 (LBA) See: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/fat32-or-fat32-lba-partition-ty...

Does Debian have a backward compatibility feature? Is there a sandbox where I can run out-dated programs without hassle? I have tried rebuilding old programs but all I accomplish is making messes. I didn't miss anything. But you did -- you didn't read the info I posted. Click on link and read the page. It's a generic DEB that contains the same binaries that Mozilla provides.cds60601 wrote: ↑2021-09-08 16:43 You missed the post above from 4D696B65 ...

Re: Debian 11, firefox-esr is not supported for online meetings
I use the regular Firefox release; you can just download the tarball from the website. I checked my Firefox ESR from Debian at that link and it also fails the test, but using the regular Firefox release it passes. The archive Mozilla provides is already compiled so all you have to do is extract it ...

Re: Using 4 TB disk with old motherboard.
This is the simplest solution I can think of: First of all, use a GPT partition table. Then create four partitions: 1. An unformatted 1 MB BIOS boot partition (type ef02). 2. A 25 to 50 GB partition for the system (that's plenty of space for a file server). 3. A suitably-sized swap partition. 4. A f...
