I picked up an Asus K53Z (actually the Amazon variant, A53Z) a few months ago; quad core AMD A6 Llano processor, Radeon 6520G graphics, and everything plays nice even with Debian Squeeze. FWIW a couple engineers I know who are developing product under Linux have said that with all the recent laptops...

I've thought about it but decided against it. I figured making and maintaining a backup would be more time consuming than doing the occasional re-install. Sure, I just use rsync to maintain bootable backups on another HD partition, and on a USB HD in case the main drive fails. And, yeah ... I work right off a live filesystem (no X, logged in as root only); never any issues.

'grub customizer' ..... no idea what that is. Anyway, you can add custom boot entries to /etc/grub.d/40_custom and update-grub will append them to the boot menu.

I also like it, in concept anyway. But I question how 'huge' or significant it may be, just no way of knowing plus they already seem to be late to the party.
