Re: Whaddya do to tweak a new install?
Copy the user's configs and the system configs from a backup/another system/an-usb-stick-backup/an-external-harddisk-backup Case closed. Blink of an eye. I keep hoping someday it'll be that simple, but since the only time I do a complete, new install seems to be when I want a newer Debian version o...

Re: Writing/Erasing/Formatting old Mini & regular sized SD m
I don't remember what it's called, but there's some oddball kind of write protection you find on some of these cards that can only be removed by formatting, and some require a special, third party app to do a low level format. Kind of like all these flash drives you get that have some nasty Windoze ...

Re: Whaddya do to tweak a new install?
Invariably I wind up doing a lot of system tweaks: networking and security, system variables (sysctl), power management, changes and additions to init scripts, set up cron jobs, etc. Add a few custom built drivers/modules, installing and configuring all my preferred apps, scripts I use that have to ...

Re: Torvalds returns to KDE
Amazing people get so worked up about this. In fact Torvalds always seems a little agnostic about DE's, although I think he may enjoying stirring the pot a bit. Whatever DE you choose, it's really nothing more than a set of tools creating an environment in which to use more important computin...

IMO copying anything under /etc from Ubuntu to Debian is just ..... well, it's just plain evil! And there's your proof!

Re: PulseAudio not working on Sid install
Glad you got it working ..... though stuff like this drives me crazy, when I don't really know what the problem was. Unfortunately Linux audio always seems to stubbornly resist my best efforts to figure out. Documentation is a mess, IMO, and then there's all this stuff that seems to be layered one o...

Re: Tips and advice on buying a laptop for Debian.
I picked up an Asus K53Z (actually the Amazon variant, A53Z) a few months ago; quad core AMD A6 Llano processor, Radeon 6520G graphics, and everything plays nice even with Debian Squeeze. FWIW a couple engineers I know who are developing product under Linux have said that with all the recent laptops...

Re: What do you use Debian for?
Is porn mission critical? Absolutely! Debian is the only OS I have installed and is the only OS I have had installed since 2004 when XP decided to literally eat 4k mp3s. Although I did start with Kanotix>sidux>Debian sid. Want to collaborate on a Debian-based 'Ultimate Entertainment' distro? 8)

Re: Do you make backups of your installation of Debian?
I've thought about it but decided against it. I figured making and maintaining a backup would be more time consuming than doing the occasional re-install. It only takes me an hour at most to re-install Debian and all my applications from a net install. No offence, but i doubt that. If you want to d...

Re: Do you make backups of your installation of Debian?
Sure, I just use rsync to maintain bootable backups on another HD partition, and on a USB HD in case the main drive fails. And, yeah ... I work right off a live filesystem (no X, logged in as root only); never any issues.

That all depends on how much you'll be paying me for this answer to that question. I take PayPal.nadir wrote:How much are you willing to pay to me for answering the question?

'grub customizer' ..... no idea what that is. Anyway, you can add custom boot entries to /etc/grub.d/40_custom and update-grub will append them to the boot menu.

Re: Iceweasel sluggish, any ideas?
Thanks for the recommendation. But what part do I clean up? Using about:config URL or opening prefs.js in .mozilla and delete/change what? Editing prefs.js directly isn't an exact science to my knowledge :) but seems to be accepted practice among Mozilla enthusiasts. Basically just open it up in a ...

Yes, this is an older thread.... I've been having similar issues for quite sometime. I disabled addons, tried several other things which didn't have an effect. I was able to get the browser back up the lightning speed by "simply" disabling the English spell checker. This is on my AMD64 Te...

I also like it, in concept anyway. But I question how 'huge' or significant it may be, just no way of knowing plus they already seem to be late to the party.
We'll see.....
