Re: Office Suites?
I use Softmaker Office. Initial purchase price is reasonable; upgrade prices are even more reasonable; user manuals are excellent; support forum is good and answers frequently come from the programmers themselves, software is available for both Linux and Windows.

Re: setting Up Printer without CUPS
Before CUPS became popular, there was LPRng. (www.lprng.com). It was a very nice system, but the developer hasn't put a great deal of effort into it for many years, and there is no guarantee that newer printers are fully supported. Still, you might like it. The only other option of which I am aware ...

Time for a New Laptop
The HP that I'm now using has never been what I would call Unix-friendly. Unix-tolerant might be more descriptive. I'll try Lenovo this time. I've heard good things about them. So many models to choose from; such a low signal-to-noise ratio in the descriptions. The two things that do stand out are.....

It was a pretty good day, actually. But, you are correct; it was not a very nice post. It was intentionally not a very nice post.Coco wrote: That's not very nice. Have a bad day?

Manning Publications puts out Perl books that I consider to be much better than the Camel and the Llama.

Re: upgrading to Xfce 4.6
1. Wait for it to appear in Debian Backports, which might happen tomorrow or might never happen. 2. Edit /etc/apt/sources.list to point to testing just long enough to upgrade to 4.6, then change the file back to point to stable. 3. Remove the Debian packages for 4.4, then use the Xfce graphical inst...

Where is xfconf? -- SOLVED
I wiped the hard drive on an HP laptop and installed Lenny (stable), Xorg and Fluxbox. The install went smoothly, Xorg seems to have correctly determined the dimensions of the LCD, and I had no problem launching Fluxbox. I then downloaded the graphical installer for Xfce-4.6, installed all the depen...

Two days now I've been using SoftMaker Office 2008. There are some things that it does differently than MS Office. Yesterday I would have told you that it was less easy to use than MS Office, but I picked up speed today as I learned where everything is. I've had no problem opening files created in W...
