Re: Where to change Xorg video driver?
Allow me to rephrase the question. Suppose I have a clean install of Debian 7 without fglrx. By default it uses the open radeon driver, but I want to tell it to use "vesa" instead. In Debian 6 I would go to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, where would I go in Debian 7? Edit: From reading the wiki I'm g...

Re: Where to change Xorg video driver?
Thanks for your reply. There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-fglrx.conf file on my system and obviously this file also didn't exist before I installed fglrx proprietary drivers. Debian 7 must have some way of deciding which video driver to use, the way it used to have xorg.conf ?

Where to change Xorg video driver?
On my Debian system I like to switch between the open and the proprietary video driver. I used to do this by editing a line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf but now that I installed Debian 7 the file no longer exists. I looked in /usr/share/X11 but cannot find any line relating to the video driver, perhaps I m...

Re: get matlab for debian
Funny, my molecular modelling TA recently recommended R as well. It looks nice if you can handle the strange syntax and function names.

Re: get matlab for debian
There are Matlab versions for Linux, but they require a licence. If your university or company has an institutional licence, chances are they provide a Linux version for download on some internal network.

Everything is subject to criticism. Saying you're "sick of it" isn't going to do any good.

Re: Interesting DFSG discussion on debian-devel mailing list
The reason I say this is because it sounds like your philosophy and Debian's does not match. Ordinarily, this would not be a problem, but it seems that you expect Debian to change its core philosophy to match yours. Does this not strike you as somewhat.....I dunno.....Selfish? If Debian's philosoph...

I never claimed that they are mutually exclusive, I only stated that I personally don't care about the "freedom". I understand the GNU philosophy (oh, the memories) quite well, actually, I just don't agree with it.

Re: Interesting DFSG discussion on debian-devel mailing list
There is no reason that a distro that prides itself on having only free software should compromise itself to give someone else "choice." I don't agree. I use Debian for its quality, not for its "freedom", and I would like to use it together with quality "non-free" soft...

Re: Interesting DFSG discussion on debian-devel mailing list
I think the above release is a good development, however you should realize there are many people (me included) that would not "rather reject the practical benefit of that [non-free] code than submit ourselves to the restrictions that come with it." (Quoted from the list message linked abo...

My university provides a complete Mathematica 7.0.1 ISO for Linux. Yes, it's commercial software, but the university has an institutional licence.

Re: Browsers suggestions?
MS' integration of IE in Windows received criticism for more reasons than only monopoly abuse. For example, security reasons. As for speed effects: the advantage that Konqueror has because most of its components are loaded when KDE starts, can be achieved for any browser by simply starting it up wit...

Can't take a step on the net without stepping in *buntu...yuck... If they still have that shitty colour theme, I suggest someone with GIMP skills gimps an Ubutnu desktop into a picture of a huge pile of crap. Iceweasel and KDE are notorious bloatware as far as I'm concerned. My computer runs Opera ...

The typical Debian user seems to be the type that is occupied with lots of meaningful work, and thus doesn't have time to lurk around forums all day.

Re: Browsers suggestions?
If someone is using KDE then Konqueror is the obvious choice and seeing as it's an integral part of KDE I'm struggling to see how anybody can describe it as bloated. It has its faults but bloat is not one of them. Some people call that a pro for Konqueror and elsewhere you hear them bash IE for it....

Re: Problem with wifi interface Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
These should be a button or switch on your laptop that you have to press to enable the wireless networking card. Search for it thoroughly, look in the manual if you can't find it. My laptop also has an iwlwifi card, see here for a description of how I got it working. But first you need to pull that ...
