Did you try running: gpasswd -a user_name audio as root to add yourself to the audio group? This should add the user_name to the audio group. Run the command groups as your regular user to see what groups you are a member of. When I run the groups command I get: tom@debian:~$ groups tom dialout cdro...

I don't know much but I've been keeping an eye out for laptops that might be linux-compatible. There are laptops that are designed for linux, or that come with linux pre-installed: http://system76.com/index.php?cPath=28 http://www.linuxcertified.com/linux_laptops.html http://www.thelinuxlaptop.com/...

Another way to handle grub: This is the way I do it. If you have Debian's grub installed to the MBR, then install Ubuntu's grub to the Ubuntu root partition [dev/sdb6, or (hd1,5) in grub-speak]. Then use the configfile method to chainload Debian's grub to Ubuntu's grub. At the end of Debian's menu.l...

If it is an ordinary 3 button mouse (left, right, plus scroll wheel) it should work right out of the box. You might try "Protocol" "Auto" in xorg.conf. Here is the mouse section from my xorg.conf from my Lenny install. I did not change anything. This is how the Debian installer s...

Then you are running Etch then. To find out you can run: cat /etc/debian_version and it will tell you what version you are using. For the nvidia driver, if you have an older nvidia card, you may need nvidia-glx-legacy instead of nvidia-glx. The wiki article discusses this. You should probably instal...

1. As others have said, use "su" and the root password to do things that require administrator privileges. When you are done doing what you needed to do as root, just type "exit" to return the terminal to regual user. 2. For the nvidia driver, install it the Debian way with modul...

Re: debian adsl error

I working in adsl When you go online in Windows, do you need to login with your user name and password? If so, you probably use PPPoE. See this article on the Debian wiki: http://wiki.debian.org/PPPoE?highlight=%28adsl%29 You may need to download pppoeconf from another computer, or from Windows, if...

Re: Wireless for Lenny

Does anybody have any suggestions for a wireless card to use with Debian Lenny? Mike I'm using the Belkin F5D9010 v3 wireless card which uses the Ralink rt61 driver. All you need is the firmware-ralink from the non-free repo to get it to work. The card works well in Lenny: http://catalog.belkin.com...

There are native linux drivers for your card. See this: http://intellinuxwireless.org/ also see: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=31448&highlight=intel+wireless+3945abg and http://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi After some quick searching around it seems that the iwlwifi drivers and firmware hav...

I run debian testing. For the safest way to get updates is it better to run "apt-get dist-upgrade" or "apt-get upgrade"? There seem to be different opinions about which is better or safest from what I have read around the forums. Is one generally recomended over the other? So far...

If you want something cheaper the nvidia 6200 will work just fine also. The 6200 AGP card does not require a seperate molex power connector from your power supply, but the 6600 AGP will, so make sure you have a free power connector if you go with the 6600.

My DSL from Verizon uses PPPoE, and does require a username and password. Most DSL modems nowadays are "smart" modems, so you can just point your web browser to the modem's address (192.168.1.1 for me) and enter the username and password into the modems configuration. After that, every tim...

Thanks Groweropolis, After doing apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade today I got me a new kernel, so my ndiswrapper is toast. I knew it would be after doing a kernel upgrade, so now I got a good excuse to go with serialmonkey (I follow debian-testng): debian:/home/tom# uname -r 2.6.21-2-686 debian:...

Ok, thanks Rickh.
I knew about the serialmonkey drivers, but I had trouble with them in ubuntu, so I did not try them in debian. I will have to look into that. Someone told me on the Zenwalk IRC chat that there may be a rt61 driver in the linux kernel soon.

My wireless card uses the Ralink rt61 driver. Unfortunately, the driver that comes with ubuntu fiesty is buggy and causes my laptop to lock up solid on boot up. Blacklisting the driver (or removing the card) is the only way to avoid the lock up. http://ubuntu.loathsome.us/doc/rt61 The fix for this i...
