Re: [Off-Topic] Just discorvered that I can do youtube without going to youtube
When all is said and done, this is probably the real solution. YT easily becomes a time vampire. Television 2.0. True. I feel that not going to the youtube.com frontpage and especially using it without an account helped me escape from this automatism of just watching similar content with little sel...

Yeah, +1 for using Newsboat and Invidious RSS links to keep up to date with YouTube channels.

My favourite way of browsing YouTube as of recently: ytfzf
https://github.com/pystardust/ytfzf
Otherwise, I also tend to directly use:
It's in the repos:
or, if I need to download something
https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp

apt show mpv

Re: [Off-Topic] The oldest file that you have in your possession?
My oldest personal files are from 2005: Notes from university, photos and IRC/Facebook/MSN Messenger chat logs. I guess my posts on this forum go back to 2006/2007 if you're counting that. :) Sadly, all of my files from before were either not interesting to keep or I lost them on dying hard drives, ...

Re: Firefox ESR (vanilla Debian package) removed custom search engine
It's an unneeded feature anyway. Just make your search engine of choice your home page and new tab page in the settings. Both DDG and STRTPG allow you to personalize settings with a URL. Thanks for chiming in, but sorry, I don't share your sentiment. I myself decide what is a needed feature and I d...

Firefox ESR (vanilla Debian package) removed custom search engine
This is the first time this happened on the vanilla Debian Firefox package: Firefox just informed me that it has changed my default search engine. When clicking on "Learn more", a website informs me that: From time to time, Mozilla may update the list of search engines that are available i...

Shouldn't you ask this over on the Ubuntu forums?

Re: [Software] How install Muon package manger?
The Muon package manager is no longer maintained by the KDE project. It also isn't in the Debian repositories as far as I can tell. I would therefore not suggest installing it from other sources. Muon looks like a copy of Synaptic , which is still in the repos and maintained. Install it from a termi...

Hi,
Can you tell us which posts specifically?
Thanks.
EDIT: Also, you can of course send the admin a private message.

Re: What helped/encouraged you to increase your Linux understanding?
For me it was having an old computer that didn't work with Gnome/KDE and where I had to run a window manager, scripting a lot of the functionality that was taken for granted in desktops.
I've also been on this forum most of my Linux life and have learned from howtos and random posts.

Re: [O/S] Suspension and hibernation in Debian 12
Since you've done so much prep, I'm assuming all the firmware is installed and that you're sure, the nvidia card runs well with the nouveau driver instead of using a proprietary one. The SATA thing would rather suggest that your hard drive controller might have some issues. It's odd that it worked i...

Re: Lenovo = a piece of crap?
Lenovo = a piece of crap? Yes, and increasingly so. Ever since the product lines were taken over by Lenovo from IBM, it's been a very slow downhill thing. The T and X series that end in 20 were the last ones to have amazing keyboards, the ones ending in 70 were probably the ones that still had good...

You could read the release notes that come with the package or ask the package maintainer.

Re: Caja doesn't show thumbnails of smartphone and tablet files
I've had a similar behaviour in the past, but I don't remember which file manager it was. Basically, due to security and speed bottleneck concerns, the file manager would only thumbnail internal drives and nothing else. Maybe it's that?

Re: [Software] Difference between "alt + f2" and command line?
Looks like Matlab was installed from a 3rd party repository or even manually. I'm assuming that it didn't come with a .desktop file or it came with one that doesn't work properly. Those files are the ones that the Alt+F2 run dialog uses to run programmes. You can use tools like Menulibre to create y...
