Re: No window decorations with user switching
What command do you use to start metacity manually? Xfce4 doesn't not use metacity so trying to start it in xfce4 probably won't do you any good (though I reckon xfce4 could be tweaked to use metacity instead of its native wm, which is called xfwm4). Have a look at the metacity man page for how to s...

Re: 6.04 minimal installation
Well, if you're only gonna use it for C++ programs I'd recommend that you ditch the desktop environment altogheter and just go for a window manager, probably without a login manager too, or at least use slim or xdm instead of gdm. Me, I'm a fluxbox and openbox fan but there are tons of good ones out...

Re: Clock chnges 4 hours back every boot
Well, one possible explanation would be your bios setting. When you say "single-user mode" is the network active then? I assume it is up and running in multi-user mode. If so, the bios might give the right time and once network i activated you get the wrong time, which would suggest that y...

Re: The Decline of this Forum
I don't post here very often, but I read this forum a lot and I agree with you about the forum declination. In my opinion, recently there has been a mass migration from ubuntu to Debian (after that crap ubuntu 11.04 was released) and now the forum is full of former ubuntu users that keep their same...

Re: Fluxbox Won't Exit
Start fluxbox manually with the log option (this puts the output into a file that you specify). Try exit fluxbox again. If the problems lies with fluxbox (and not generally with the X-server) you should have it logged bu fluxbox. Posting the output of the log file could give people here a clue to wh...

Re: To All Dear Mods, Admins, etc
Perhaps the "staff" should have to earn the community's respect instead of mandate it. Worst "Rule" ever, but not a surprise. It sounds like something ubnutbu would shove down the peasants' throats. There is no need for further discussion on this matter... here . +1. And maybe, ...

Re: To All Dear Mods, Admins, etc
I was here two years ago, too. Didn't have any problems with the mods then, don't have any problems with them now. Yeah, well, a lot of people obviously do, who never had problems before. The style of moderation and the atmosphere of the forum have definitely changed during my years here. And if yo...

Re: info
I had a sharp look at the forum. After i have seen the reaction of the "so called staff" to the outstanding posts of julian i gave up all hope. That is one of them: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=59929#p349307 The "so called staff" does not seem to be able to ...

Re: Could we get an update of the forum guidelines?
However, please remember, guidelines are just guidelines. Each mod has the right to act as they feel appropriate for the situation in hand. And here I was thinking that the guidelines was a framework that the board was to function within, constraining admins, moderators and members alike but, obvio...

Could we get an update of the forum guidelines?
Reading the forum guidelines there is, at least as far as I can see, no reference to banning. There was a time when this made sense. For years, banning was, to my knowledge, both unheard of and uncalled for. Yet, now people are obviously being banned from the forum, and this for various reasons. Per...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy
I agree. Somehow being more friendly to newcomers has been implemented as "let new members be as rude, antagonistic and provocative as they like (repeatedly). Meanwhile be harsh and intolerant towards the existing members." The relationship changed from us being on reasonable and friendly...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy
What a different place this was when most of the admins and mods actually enjoyed the company of the members, participated on the board and had a sense of humour and proportion. I think this is half the heart of the matter (though some mods and admins still are very much part of the community and n...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy
Remember Lavene and RickH? Those were the good, old days! Rick used to drive me insane. Looking back, I see how much knowledge he brought to the forum and how he kept the new members in line. Now I miss him. He gave Lavene fits, but she took it in stride. She never had to ban anyone or take "a...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy
If some people running this board don't much like the members, don't like to put in the time, and don't want to participate, well what the hell are you doing here anyway? I've wondered that sometimes myself but not very often as I simply visit less frequently and post less often. Maybe they're just...
