Problem using bcm43xx-fwcutter

I have a issue that I have been having a problem with. I have not found a soution from either this forum, or by "Googling" the internet. My system is an HP nx6610 laptop running a fresh net install of Etch. I have a Broadcom4306 802.11 b/g wireless card (rev 03). In the past I was able to ...

Just to add my two cents worth, (and kill this thread if history repeats itself ;-) ) I think both Debian and Ubuntu have their strenghts that appeal to their target audiences. The corporate backing of Ubuntu is on balsnce a very good thing. The wide spead distribution of the discs, along with tiere...

Amazing - WalMart, of all places, is selling a (quasi) Linux PC! CompUSA, Staples, Circuit City, etc I can believe. WalMart? No, I cannot. Simply amazing. Actually, this is the second time Walmart has offered PC's with Linux. A few years ago, they sold several desktop models and one inexpensive (fo...

I agree with one of llivv's comments. Finding just where to read up on a topic to answer a specific question can be a daunting task. Google often gives too many options to review completely, and searching this forum, or FAQ's can turn up a lot of posts that only periferally touch on the topic. (This...

Actually, I don't get tired of "hand holding" but I do get tired of answering the same questions over and over again. It seems that some people don't take the time to search the forum before posting a question. I really have no problem trying to answer a question if the poster says that th...

The news about OSX's firewall is very disappointing. I run Debian on an old ThinkPad, and Apple OS 10.4, (the previous version,) on a two year old 12" Powerbook. Looks like when I need to upgrade the OS on my PowerBook, I will probably turn to Debian. As for users of 10.5, Apple will probably k...

I am in complete agreement with you. Once I got my Debian Etch system doing literally everything I wanted/needed for it to do, I lost most if not all of my desire to distro hop. At least for my work computers. My test box, now that is another story.

swirling_vortex, I agree with you. I have Mepis 7.0 beta 5 on an Old HP nx6610 laptop. Its a solid distro. Since it's based on Etch/stable, alternate repos like debian-multimedia.org works as well. For me as a bonus, it recognizes my laptop's Broadcom wireless card out of the box. That was just a bo...

To answer the question about easily switching between networks, I personally find the network manager applet very helpful. On my Debian box I run Gnome so I use Network-Manager and Network-Manager-Gnome. By clicking on the applet in the right upper corner, I get a list of all networks that are broad...

Help with Ralink RT2600 PCMCIA Card

I have Googled and searched this forum without success. Here is my current setup: IBM ThinkPad R40 with 1.4 G Pentium M, 768 gig RAM, 32 meg ATI accelerated video and an 80 gig HD. I replaced the built in 802.11b mini PCI card with a Cicso Aironet 802.11 a/b/g PCMCIA card which is based on the Ather...

I have to say that while I also prefer Debian to any M$ product. When I had to use it, I thought Windows 2000 was far more stable than ony other version of Windows. The only problem was the lack of easy backward compatibility to DOS and some consumer oriented hardware. XP was a reasonable compromise...

Just thought I would post a followup. As I examined my system, I noticed that the Kernel I was running was 2.6.18-4, rather than -5. This despite multiple attempts at upgrading my system. Then I remembered that I installed Etch with a testing version of the Etch net install cd. Since I did not have ...
