Are they being listed in the "played list" or have they been added to any play list? You haven't mentioned where they are listed, this could be a big part of why they are listed. Just an idea though

Good Luck to you dude, I my best friend was had almost the same diagnosis a few years back - he was in the early part of Stage 3. He made a fighting recovery in under a year and I am sure you will too 8)

hardware seems to be fine, it is ejected by VLC no problem and up until I edited fstab is was mounted under root

OK thanks for the input, I'll keep hacking away at it and posting updates here in case I come across something somebody has dealt with before - would it be worth upgading to Wheezy? because this seems to be a squeeze problem from what I have read about on the webz

I think it is easy enough, all icons can be changed by right clicking on your desktop,
under themes you can change your icon set, along with many other things
