Re: Wheezy 7.4.x install hangs after network hardware detect

Thanks for the suggestion keithpeter. I will try Antix but I don't think it's adequate for our end users. BTW, the old laptop does seem to have hardware issues. I will try a different test machine later. I'll report back if I make some progress. UPDATE: As of today, I have yet to get Debian installe...

Re: Wheezy 7.4.x install hangs after network hardware detect

Thanks for reminding me about AntiX. I don't know if it will be acceptable for our end-users, but I'll try it out anyway. With that low Mem ram it's a no no,check this link and check what distro is good for that low mem ram. http://www.renewablepcs.com/about-linux/which-linux-distros-are-the-best I ...

Re: Wheezy 7.4.x install hangs after network hardware detect

"Likewise i believe you'll be able to install Debian 7 LXDE on a low ram system, it will just take longer. Note that you were able to successfully install on a different Dell Inspiron system...not the same one that is now giving you problems. Again leading to my suspicion that you have hardware...

Re: Wheezy 7.4.x install hangs after network hardware detect

Well, I'm sorry to say that I didn't get through the Debian LXDE LiveCD installation. I don't want to branch out into other issues as this could be a multifactorial problem, but I'll just let you know what happened. First, the installer wasn't able to connect to any of the package repositories. I do...

Re: Wheezy 7.4.x install hangs after network hardware detect

Thanks! You've been quite helpful. You're probably right about Wheezy with LXDE. I'm trying out the Debian LiveCD with LXDE and I'm trying to install from the desktop link to the graphical installer right now. I'll let you know how it goes. Right now I do have 512 available; that's actually the amou...

Re: Wheezy 7.4.x install hangs after network hardware detect

Thanks for the links. Yes, I see what you mean. The official minimum hardware requirements for Debian have gone up from 256mb minimum on workstations to 320mb minimum. Why is that? I suppose I could use Squeeze, but using an outdated version of Debian Stable seems like it could be a bit of a stretch...

Re: Wheezy 7.4.x install hangs after network hardware detect

"It seems: 1. Your hardware is old. 2. Old Knoppix version picks up good. 3. Never compare Debian to other distros. Debian follows strict rules and regulations for many reasons (You should already know). Other distros tend to be more hardware friendly for easy compliance and usability. Debian m...

Wheezy 7.4.x install hangs after network hardware detection

Hello there. Trying to install Debian Stable on a Dell Inspiron 8100 using net install image. 256mb RAM So I've tried several different CD images, all Debian-based, and the installer always hangs at some point. 'Haven't been able to get any newly released LiveCD's going either, but I'm using Knoppix...

Re: OMG! I don't want Openoffice.org

To Dust Hill Resident: I am addicted to making older and low-spec hardware work with new Linux OS's such as Debian and Ubuntu. Laptops and all-in-one computers like the old iMac are favorites. I typically use Xfce4 as a desktop, even on newer hardware, but in this case Itried LXDE because the RAM wa...

Update: Installing on netbook: Crystalview 7 with ARM Via 86

I've found some interesting things on this website http://www.openwm8650.org . I'm not 100% certain that the VIA 8650 chipset is the same as WM8650 though. I assume it is, as VIA is WonderMedia's parent company. 'Still would love some helpful advice from anyone who's interested or who has had experi...

Installing on netbook: Crystalview 7 with ARM Via 8650

I'm tempted to try out installing some version of Debian on the little netbook that's available at Overstock.com, Big Lots or Walmart for just under $100.00. http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/7-inch-VIA-8650-Android-2.2-Netbook/6263288/product.html The netbook is the Crystalview 7, which, like my...

Re: HOWTO: Xfce - Replace GKSU with PolicyKit

Greetings. Please tell me if I might benefit from using policykit. I have been using gksudo to call synaptic because my default user account is set up as sudoer and I don't wish to enable root logins. If I use policykit, for example, would the end user receive an error message if he/she types their ...

Re: oem-config-prepare for Debian

Yes, I've done this too. When I am working on a computer for someone whom I know, or at least someone whose name I know, I can just use their name. Of course, if I want to use FAI, fully automatic install, or if I want to image the drive of a machine so as to use the same image on identical computer...

Re: oem-config-prepare for Debian

It seems to me that Debian still does not have something like oem-config. All that I want to do is leave the creation of a user name and password to the end user. I can put my default settings into /etc/skel and remove the user, "oem" so that there will be no registered user on the system ...

Thank you for your response, but FAI isn't a tool which accomplishes this. Please see the following link.

oem-config-prepare for Debian

Hello all. Perhaps you've heard of this before, and perhaps not. Ubuntu has a nifty package called oem-config that allows you to configure a system to delete a user AND home folder called "oem" and ask the new user for a username, password, language, time zone, etc. on reboot; it then crea...

SOLVED:Re: OMG! I don't want Openoffice.org

Thanks guys. Next time I do a net install I will just install the base system of Stable, then change my /etc/apt/sources.list to Testing rather than Stable, then do a dist-upgrade via apt-get. THEN, and only then, will I start installing the desktop and selected packages.
