what are Debian Alternatives

Can someone explain what are Debian Alternatives?
How are they used?
Why they are included with a default install?

Re: Use HTTPS

@ NewHere very insightful thought regarding wifi - in my opinion anyways. With every new iteration of hardware there appears to be a SERIOUS lack of attention to personal security. ie: How may ways does your hardware connect? If you haven't already thought about this issue, maybe it's time you looke...

Re: Compiling the rt2870 driver for chipset

Debian is moving away from building as root

you might want to try changing the build env using fakeroot or fuse,
if that applies to puppy's ramdisk.

Re: Debian systemd maintainer "taking a break"

LTS may have outlasted it's duty cycle. since it was originally designed to help users avoid systemd in jessie. Are you completely deluded? Please let us all know when and why Debian LTS was started. So the "longterm" kernels listed over at https://www.kernel.org/ were designed for jessie...

Re: nvidia driver installation hangs on a fresh stretch inst

To make it work with stretch, I had to do what is described here: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=139769#p688896 Then this: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=139769#p688923 And finally: https://gist.github.com/s41m0n/323513c95290c85f7054384ac34c41c5 Thanks again fo...

Re: X crashing under mysterious conditions

have you used nvidia-settings? (recommended) and here is appendix B https://www.naic.edu/~phil/hardware/nvidia/doc/driverInstall/appendix-b.html It's a lot of reading and can usually be avoided after using nvidia-settings https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers/Configuration other resources ar...

Re: failed upgrade stretch -> testing/buster

a lot of times you can work around issues like that using a different install order. above probably sounds like jibberish to anyone who hasn't done it... ie: # uninstall vdpau-va-driver (if you think that is offending packages) # install mesa-va-drivers or mesa-vdpau-drivers or mesa-vulkan-drivers (...

Re: how to slow down SATA drive to 1.5Gb/s ?

The server had a WD10EACS drive with a jumper to slow it to 1.5Gbps. This worked. Now it has a Seagate st2000dm001 which I cannot slow to 1.5Gbps and so it doesn't work well. I think it's because it isn't a "real" SATA port but instead is a PATA / SATA bridge and it only likes SATA versio...

Re: Single User Security

I do like that in Buster the /usr and /lib trees have been simplified. Perhaps that can be expanded to allow for more interaction with other platforms. Can you easily elaborate on your reasons why you like the USR MERGE concept? I say easily here because there are a lot of other posts with clues I ...

an easy way (well easy for me anyways) run a live Debian 9 or install another Debian 9 on an empty partition and see if the same issue show up on either or both the machines in question before you add the recombiled packages to the new install

Re: Debian goes to sleep, how to disable

Seen in dmesg https://paste.debian.net/hidden/075af845/ line 1029 until 1161 you see it going into deep sleep, disabling all CPUs(I find that hard to believe) and turns everything off. How do I disable this? The device is not inactive (not a heavy load) but still doing some tasks I specified. This ...
