When the kernel is replaced out from under the running one, it doesn't like it since the modules in /lib/modules/<kernel> are also overwritten. Ultimately what I did was to pop open a terminal, type in 'alsamixer' and turn PCM down and Master/Front/Stereo/Whatever up to adjust for the decrease in volume. whenever i mount a windows partition or insert a cd in my dvd drive, its icon pops up on the desktop but i dont need this as i can access them by going to "places->computer"
