The problem is that it won't actually finish booting into the newer kernel. It disables the drive that it's running into difficulties with. That is, it disables the drive that / is on, so it can't boot at all. It just hangs while it waits on the root filesystem.

dist-upgrade to lenny causing problems

I have a non-techie friend for whom I set up a Debian desktop (and she loves it). I went to switch her over from etch to lenny earlier tonight, and this odd error started popping up on boot and causing the system to hang. ata1.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40) From what I've been able to ga...

You can either do some ARP poisoning to redirect all traffic on your network through your own system, or you can use the macof program from the dsniff package to attempt to DoS the MAC table on your switch in an attempt to get it to fail open as a hub.

That would help explain why the package always takes so long (longer than a DE) to compile. I wonder what else they're doing like that.

Ok, we're almost ready to go! All we need before we can kick this project off is somebody who knows a thing or two about website design to make the wiki look good. Once that's done, we can digg it. So, if anybody here has some design talent, please PM me or post here, preferably with things that you...

Ok, people are gone now. I still have some writing to do. Grad school's a real pain and drain. Still, I'll try to get enough loaded up for this to actually go somewhere real soon now. This should be fun. :D

Nope! I prefer to still have my sense of sight. The practical lesson here is to NEVER EVER take an adjustable rate mortgage. The rate you pay, and consequently the payments you make, adjust in response to things completely out of your control, and can push out of your ability to pay. Don't pa...

Whatever's handy. Something that can handle traffic, makes a modicum of sense, and that doesn't cost too much (or anything). We don't need anything glitzy, just something that will get the job done.

Wonderful! :o Can you get a wiki set up, then? Once that's up, I can start loading information into it and build the skeleton of the document. The typical marketing plan takes a phased approach. Each phase informs later phases and is informed by previous ones. So, we'll want to work on each one succ...

BTW, is anyone else following the Canadian dollar? It's currently sitting at about $1.09 USD to the Canadian dollar - record highs. This morning it hit $1.10, the all-time record since around 1950. The USD is dropping in value. The subprime crash the followed the bursting of the housing bubble earl...

Linux Marketing

I was sitting in my marketing class, going over marketing plans, and had a thought. Linux is either unknown to people in general or misunderstood. There really aren't that many linux users, relative to the other major operating systems, particularly Windows. What would be nice is if it could win eno...

Job Hunting

It's that time at long last, time to go find gainful employment. My training is more in business than in technology, but I want to be close to FOSS and promote it. Does anyone know of any place that I should go looking?

Burning questions

I'm beginning to notice that the discs that I burn have a high rate of turning out poorly, either immediately or after a short period of time. The tricky part is that the failure rate isn't 100%, and when a disc does turn out poorly, the results are a bit subtler than a fully corrupted disc. Instead...

Ah, finally, some people with useful info and opinions! (I must say, I didn't expect to be encouraged *not* to switch.
