Re: Why do you use debian?

Why do you use debian? Because the Debian User Forum admins don't get upset about necro-bumping a 14 yr. old thread. ;) jk Seriously though, I've used Debian since 3.1, before that having used Fedora Core,RedHat and some BSDs. Some of my machines are running Arch, which I love, but Debian's always ...

Re: [Discussion] happy 30th birthday, debian!

Happy [belated] birthdays debian! I started with debian 3.1(sarge) and have used many other Linux distros over the years, but I keep coming back.

Debian 12 in dual boot with Arcolinux, an Arch-Linux derivative. ;)

So something has changed since last month? I seriously doubt that.
Not last month, "recent times" meaning sometime in the last few years.

Re: Sudo or not sudo?

. You still can get it by not creating a root user I must have been distracted and used the Graphical Install instead of the normal installer. That part wouldn't matter -- when the user goes with the Graphical install option and the Root password is left blank, you get sudo. The installer has chang...

Re: Sudo or not sudo?

Sorry for posting up such an old thread, but this issue keeps nagging me for an answer. Since using Debian 10 I've noticed that using "sudo" has become the default now...apparently(?). I've been using Debian since Sarge was Stable, so this is unexpected...but maybe not, as Debian Wiki is s...

Re: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'

**In other news** As part of my annual Fall update on all my old machines, I did a Debian 9.5 netinst on a Athlon xp1800 machine with a Maxtor 250GB IDE hard drive, that had no read/write outside of disk issues whatsoever. Only real issue is both Firefox esr and Chromium refuse to run, has to do wit...

Re: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'

It could be that the old BIOS is unable to read/write disk sectors beyond some limit, but GRUB needs to read data beyond that limit. What is the capacity of the disk ? How did you partition it ? You can try to install with a small partition (100 MB-1 GB) located at the beginning of the disk and mou...

Re: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'

Did you try any of the solutions you found when looking up the error msg? Yes, the solutions I came across from numerous sources were: grub rescue > ls (hd0) grub rescue > set root=(hd0) grub rescue > set prefix=(hd0)/boot/grub grub rescue > insmod normal grub rescue > normal Which did not work. Ho...

error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'

I pulled my 17 yr. old Intel D850GB based build out of the closet, and fired it up. It had XP Home on it that (for some reason) wanted re-activation. I didn't care about that, I wanted to put Fedora on it. However, during the boot process of the install disc, got the "display out of range"...

Re: Getting rid of Windows

Often I come across postings about getting rid of Windows and replacing it with Debian. But its getting rid of Windows which have been installed and which we have paid for. In the process, we may run into all sorts of technical difficulties. Why not stop Windows from being installed on the machine ...

Re: Debian Installation under UEFI

I use unetbootin to make the usb installer with the .iso. If that has ever worked for you then you just got lucky — unetbootin is an obsolete POS that does not work with Debian ISO images, there is even a bug report about it: https://bugs.debian.org/775689 All official advice from Debian is to avoi...

Re: Cellphone shopping for the paranoid android

**subscribed** My dumbphone does what I expect a mobile phone device to do, with extraordinary battery life, especially for a 9 yr. old phone. My Nexus 5X provides the mobile data services I sometimes need. However security and being smothered in Google services are a real downside. I'll have to loo...

Sorry for the necro-thread bump, but the first thing I needed to do, upon considering a PCIe SSD purchase, was to check in here to what considerations might be, for a Debian install.

Smooth sailing, it appears.

Did you try the text style installer, rather than the graphical installer?

You can select a DE here:
