Re: Let's have some civility shall we?

As of right now, today, the endless arguing about <insert needless banter> really needs to come to a complete and full halt. It's unproductive and resource exhaustive. Arguing your point with rude comments, vulgar images or otherwise doesn't make it any more or less valid, it only serves to aggrava...

"Free Cynwulf now" Now I have a warning as well

Apparently me writing this http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=59929 I have something to say about the administration of the board. First the policy is for this to be done via pm. The first time I pm'd Mez (on a different subject) I didn't even get the plain courtesy of a reply. I did ...

Re: New debian.org website

The first shock is seeing the kiddies spacefun theme at the top of the home page. Once you get past that, there are some improvements in the layout, however the levels of complexity in getting anywhere, still seem too many. For example, how many clicks to get a link to these forums? How many links ...

Yes, it works really nicely on a small screen in portrait mode, such as a smartphone.

New debian.org website

Along with Squeeze being released there is also a new look at http://debian.org I loved the clarity and readability of the old site and knew a new look was in the works. Thankfully it's equally legible and presented really well. I tried it in Iceweasel and elinks and on an Android browser on a 4.3&q...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy

I agree. Somehow being more friendly to newcomers has been implemented as "let new members be as rude, antagonistic and provocative as they like (repeatedly). Meanwhile be harsh and intolerant towards the existing members." Great work. I wonder if anyone ever checked that new members even ...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy

But stop arguing about stuff which happened and can't be turned back. First of all, stop telling people what they should or should not be discussing. Secondly this is not about one event or two events it's about the way things have evolved over a longer period of time, leading to a situation that h...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy

Please don't misrepresent what people say just in order to take an antagonistic position. That's usually referred to as a strawman and, coming from someone here less than three days(!) who somehow has such strong opinions about the status of this board, it can easily be seen as trouble making aka t...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy

So. what happened two years ago, has that Nomko person any credit in it? I hardly doubt it: 2010-12-10 08:01 , link: Nobody claimed that. mojoman didn't even mention nomko in the post you reference. Please don't misrepresent what people say just in order to take an antagonistic position. That's usu...

Re: "Free Cynwulf now" -- an analogy

I'm bored of people who have been here for periods between 0 days and a few weeks lecturing everyone. Some people have been here a while and actually have the means to compare how things are going now and how they were in the past. So please, if you're new do feel free to express your opinions at/ab...

Re: Share your shell aliases

Here's one that occasionally saves me some time. Sometimes I need to know the character set of a text file before using it.

Code: Select all

# check charset encoding #
alias vimenc='vim -c '\''let $enc = &fileencoding | execute "!echo Encoding: $enc" | q'\'''

Someone else posted this on a similar thread

Code: Select all

function calc { echo "${1}"|bc -l; }
which seems to be the neatest calculator for .bashrc

How to extract CC (Closed Caption) Subtitles using mplayer and ccextractor. Closed Caption subtitles are found on DVDs sold in Region 1 (United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories). They are usually used to provide subtitles for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. They are text subtitles c...

Re: Debian testing: Is it screwed up?

The exaile shoutcast plugin is screwed up too. Streamtuner will not tune in Shoutcast either. Streamtuner alternative @janpla Use UUID for file systems and disks, then the order in which disks are detected doesn't matter. Problems with a non-repo version of netbeans and with your MSN log-in don't e...

Re: Mounting CD/DVD under /media/<label> debian squeeze

Spent Hours searching for a way to mount my cd's and dvd's under their labels. Here's how I do it: I put the CD or DVD in the tray and push it shut. I'm running Squeeze with Xfce. Actually I don't have removable media set to mount automatically, I need to click, but the media's label is displayed i...

Re: Debian on Tablet

So far I'm quite impressed. My previous experience of Android is from a very crappy SmartQ V7, so I'm somewhat familiar with using Android and also know how futile it can be trying to use a device with inadequate firmware, poor components and bad design. SmartQ are also violators of the GPL (and oth...

Re: X-less system

No need for a fresh install in either case. Debian doesn't break because you remove xserver and Debian also reliably upgrades from release to release.

Re: X-less system

If you remove xserver-xorg and/or xserver-xorg-core and libgtk2.0-common that will remove most of it, probably all. You might still have some bits and pieces left over that it would be possible to run via VNC (or similar) without there being a display present, I'm not sure. Anyway try apt-get autore...

Re: Forum uproar

Nomko is likely a teenager who gets his kicks by doing this. The more responses he gets, the happier he is. So why don't you all resolve to never respond to his posts again, ever. That sounds fine at first but actually it's a very poor strategy. What do you do when idiots like this are jumping into...

Re: Debian on Tablet

That's the same with anything. It would be worth visiting some archos/angstrom boards or mailing lists and finding out more. You can probably get an idea of the likelihood of bricking the device by flashing it and perhaps about the reliability of the things in general. I've flashed quite a few devic...
