I am still here, honestly

Hey folks. I realise I have been very quiet for ages, it's basically for medical reasons (I hate hospitals, GPs, pharmacies, waiting lists, and all associated medical billing), so I apologise for not being able to offer my usual pathetic level of advise every now and then. Once everything is sorted ...

I have done this in my computer and got it working without any problem, you will also need this for wine and a few other packages. Never got a problem, otherwise I wouldn´t recommend it. You're lucky then. Logically, mixing stable with anything is moronic. It's all explained here: http://forums.deb...

Sorry, yeah just put all of your debs in /path/to/etch, don't bother with all that main, contrib, non-free, and letter crap. Everything in one folder. It's the lazy way. And the "Archive, Component, Origin, Label, Architecture" stuff goes in a "Release" file, sorry, I forgot to m...

Not really... it's still a far cry from "Norway is the capitol of Sweden." That's slightly offending ;) I've had worse. People thinking that Scotland is a state of England. People asking me if it's anywhere near Japan. One person didn't even know where Europe was. I might add, all of this...

No no no no no no no! This has been covered a million times recently, don't recommend mixing Etch with any other release unless by source. It just causes problems.

If he is using ext3, the word is "buggered". From what I've read (and tried) it is basically impossible for us normal people to recover data from a vanilla ext3 filesystem. There are tools out there that try and get around this (their name skips me), but I don't trust them. I just backup r...

If you install "kde-core", you will just get the desktop and few key apps like konqueror. You can then install everything else you want (multimedia players, etc.) separately. If you install "kde", you will get everything and the kitchen sink. Sorry, I'm blessed with stupidly qui...

Sorry if this seems a bit stupid, but how exactly would I block all Telnet connections and SSH connections from a certain IP address? Basically get their port numbers and filter them as described above. They are listed in many places, a quick google gave me this for example: http://www.iana.org/ass...

Have you been using the "apt-get" command or the "aptitude" command? The two don't mix well, so I'll tell you how to use both. apt-get You can get the list of nvidia packages using this command: dpkg-query -l '*nvidia*' | grep ^ii Basically, the bit before the "|" it pr...

If you're going to use the file from the nvidia site, remove all nvidia-related stuff that was installed through APT. This will stop any conflicting files. Then just follow the installer instructions and hope. It is bundled with a tool called "nvidia-settings" which lets you configure mult...

The exact error you're getting from X would help, along with your xorg.conf, so I can see whats happened so far and what it's complaining about. Get the errors from X by running this command, and post it's output please: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep ^\(EE\) Also, post the output of this command: t...

Just install the KDE package. It'll pull everything in. You can have it installed next to Gnome, so it's easy to go back if you don't like it. Once you've installed it, just pick KDE from your Sessions menu in GDM (I'm assuming you're using it just now) and it'll fire up.
